It consists of a full armoured battle group and involves all the principal phases of war. <\/p>\n<p>Manoeuvres include a squadron of 14 <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.army.mod.uk\/equipment\/23236.aspx\" title=\"Challenger 2 main battle tank web page\">Challenger 2<\/a> tanks from A Squadron, <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.army.mod.uk\/armoured\/regiments\/26878.aspx\" title=\"2nd Royal Tank Regiment web page\">2nd Royal Tank Regiment<\/a>, including close reconnaissance mounted in 8 combat vehicle reconnaissance tracked vehicles, and 2 <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.army.mod.uk\/equipment\/23237.aspx\" title=\"Warrior infantry fighting vehicle web page\">Warrior<\/a> companies in more than 30 vehicles provided by <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.army.mod.uk\/infantry\/regiments\/25383.aspx\" title=\"2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh web page\">2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Armoured manoeuvres on Salisbury Plain Training Area\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/11470\/SPTAlion1.JPG\"><\/div><figcaption>Armoured manoeuvres on Salisbury Plain Training Area during Exercise Lion Strike [Picture: Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 5-day exercise runs until 24 May and is an essential element of the tactical training of majors before they take over command of their companies and squadrons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/33328\/dte_info_leaflet_salisburyplain.pdf\" title=\"Salisbury Plain Training Area public information leaflet\">Salisbury Plain Training Area<\/a> is maintained by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), which delivers the Training Service, enabling Defence training users to live, work and deploy at home and overseas.  <\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the exercise Lieutenant Colonel Mark Hiskett, Principal Training Safety Officer, DIO Ops Training South West, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>DIO\u2019s priority is to support our Armed Forces as they prepare for operations. Salisbury Plain is the only training area in the UK where such large scale armoured manoeuvres training can take place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The DIO safety staff at Salisbury Plain have a key role to play this week.
