Particular emphasis is placed on the role played by Battle of the Atlantic veterans \u2013 both Merchant and Royal Navy \u2013 in helping overcome the appalling threat that German U-boats posed to our country\u2019s supply lines during the war.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"70th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic\">BOA 70<\/abbr> also aims to highlight the ongoing reliance that Great Britain still has on the sea, and the continuing relevance of the Royal Navy in protecting the nation\u2019s many interests around the world.<\/p>\n<p>A wide <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.royalnavy.mod.uk\/News-and-Events\/Special-Events\/Events-Calendar\" title=\"Royal Navy events calendar\">range of events<\/a> are scheduled to take place <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.itsliverpool.com\/culture\/on-the-waterfront\/battle-of-the-atlantic\/\" title=\"It's Liverpool - Battle of the Atlantic commemorations web page\">in Liverpool over the weekend<\/a>, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>over 20 warships visiting the city drawn from 6 countries<\/li>\n<li>a military capability demonstration<\/li>\n<li>a Royal commemoration ceremony in the Anglican Cathedral<\/li>\n<li>a military and veterans\u2019 parade at the Anglican Cathedral and nearby streets<\/li>\n<li>a Fleet Air Arm fly-past to honour the role of aviators in the Battle of the Atlantic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Operations Room at Derby House in Liverpool\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/11528\/20130524boa03.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>The Operations Room at Derby House in Liverpool, the headquarters of the Commander-in-Chief Western Approaches, September 1944 (library image)  [Picture: Lieutenant C H Parnall, \u00a9 IWM (A 25746)]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There is also plenty on offer for the public to engage with at the Pierhead, Albert Dock and Princes Parade over the weekend, including static and kinetic displays by the Royal Navy,  Royal Marines, RAF and the Army including helicopters, a Sea Harrier cockpit display, a combat display team, a Typhoon, a Chinook, climbing walls, a combat chef cooking demonstration and much, much more.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/liverpool.gov.uk\/\" title=\"Liverpool City Council website\">Liverpool City Council<\/a>\u2019s cabinet member for culture and tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>It is a real honour for Liverpool to be the national focus of these 70th anniversary commemorations. When it comes to maritime events, Liverpool excels. We\u2019re expecting around 250,000 visitors, and whatever the weather, the city will shine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Working in partnership with the Royal and Merchant navies, we are proud to have developed a huge programme consisting of well over 100 events.
