{"id":17068,"date":"2013-06-18T15:15:47","date_gmt":"2013-06-18T15:15:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=5a2a3af58d44362e95c4ba5d41bbd706"},"modified":"2013-06-18T15:15:47","modified_gmt":"2013-06-18T15:15:47","slug":"news-story-independent-approval-for-undercover-policing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=17068","title":{"rendered":"News story: Independent approval for undercover policing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>All long-term undercover policing operations will be independently authorised under government plans announced today.<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Policing Damian Green unveiled the proposals for new secondary legislation at the Home Affairs Select Committee.<\/p>\n<p>It means the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/surveillancecommissioners.independent.gov.uk\/\">Office for Surveillance Commissioners (OSC)<\/a> will be notified at the start of all undercover police deployments \u2013 and must approve any lasting beyond 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>The new legislation will also ensure the same long-term operations must be authorised internally by a chief constable.<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Policing Damian Green said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Undercover police operations are vital in the fight against terrorism and serious organised crime. However, covert powers must be used proportionately and only when necessary.<\/p>\n<p>I announced today our intention to legislate to ensure an independent third party \u2013 the Office of Surveillance Commissioners \u2013 will provide enhanced judicial oversight of all undercover police deployments.<\/p>\n<p>It means law enforcement agencies will need to notify the OSC at the outset of all undercover operations and get OSC approval for every deployment that lasts longer than 12 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We want the highest standards of professionalism and excellence in all aspects of policing.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The proposals follow Home Office work with the police to implement recommendations from the 2012 report into <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hmic.gov.uk\/publication\/review-of-national-police-units-which-provide-intelligence-on-criminality-associated-with-protest-20120202\/\">undercover policing by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Damian Green announces proposals for new legislation for undercover policing operations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/17068"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=17068"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/17068\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=17068"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=17068"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=17068"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
