{"id":17072,"date":"2013-06-18T14:36:50","date_gmt":"2013-06-18T14:36:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=6ea3ab377809d4592150e0f87333fee7"},"modified":"2013-06-18T14:36:50","modified_gmt":"2013-06-18T14:36:50","slug":"news-story-uk-riflemen-train-afghan-army-snipers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=17072","title":{"rendered":"News story: UK riflemen train Afghan army snipers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>A selection of crack-shot Afghan soldiers, known as warriors, from 3\/215 Brigade of the Afghan National Army (<abbr title=\"Afghan National Army\">ANA<\/abbr>) have been training on the live firing ranges at Camp Bastion as the Afghan National Security Forces take the lead for the security of their fellow Afghans.<\/p>\n<p>The live fire exercise marked the culmination of an intensive sniper course which involved <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.army.mod.uk\/infantry\/regiments\/26604.aspx\" title=\"4th Battalion The Rifles web page\"><abbr title=\"4th Battalion The Rifles\">4 RIFLES<\/abbr><\/a> personnel teaching the Afghans a host of advanced skills such as concealment, stalking and counter-sniping. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Afghan soldiers on the firing range\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/12567\/DSC02121.JPG\"><\/div><figcaption>Afghan soldiers on the firing range [Picture: Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr title=\"4th Battalion The Rifles\">4 RIFLES<\/abbr> are currently deployed to Afghanistan as the Brigade Advisory Group; they arrived in April for a 6-month tour of duty in Helmand province. The Wiltshire-based unit\u2019s role is to train and advise the <abbr title=\"Afghan National Army\">ANA<\/abbr> as they develop further capabilities and confidence to protect communities from the threat of insurgents. <\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"The spelling of sergeant with a 'j' is a military tradition peculiar, within the British Army, to The Rifles\">Serjeant<\/abbr> Moses Navunisaravi, <abbr title=\"4th Battalion The Rifles\">4 RIFLES<\/abbr>, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Most of the warriors had not seen this type of weapon before but they showed a real desire to learn and by the end of the training were highly competent.<\/p>\n<p>We are concentrating on \u2018train the trainer\u2019 programmes. Initially there were no <abbr title=\"Afghan National Army\">ANA<\/abbr> instructors available for this course so we highlighted 3 soldiers who showed confidence with the weapon and got them to teach the lessons back to the students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">At the end of the course, all 12 soldiers were qualified marksmen.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An Afghan soldier on the intensive sniper course\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/12568\/DSC02118.JPG\"><\/div><figcaption>An Afghan soldier on the intensive sniper course [Picture: Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Corporal Steve Martin, <abbr title=\"4th Battalion The Rifles\">4 RIFLES<\/abbr>, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The Afghan warriors really wanted to learn the skills of a sniper and were soon shooting some tight groupings. I was impressed by how quickly they picked it up and these skills stack the odds even further against the insurgents on the battlefield.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p>Read more about the government\u2019s policy to <a href=\"\/government\/policies\/establishing-stability-in-afghanistan\">establish stability in Afghanistan<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The warriors selected as snipers are picked by their kandak (battalion) commanders because of their skill and ability on the battlefield.
