Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin has appointed 2 new non-executive directors to the Civil Aviation Authority.<\/p>\n

David King and Graham Ward will be in post for 3 years starting from 1 September 2013. <\/p>\n

David has an extensive background in the aviation industry, particularly in the field of aviation safety having worked within the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB<\/abbr>) from 1972 until his retirement in 2010. During this time he rose to the position of Chief Inspector of Air Accidents at the AAIB<\/abbr>, a role which he held from 2005 to 2010.<\/p>\n

Graham Ward has an extensive background in the finance sector, within which he held a number of senior positions during a long career at PricewaterhouseCoopers, including Partner from 1986 to 2010. He was appointed CBE<\/abbr> in the 2004 birthday honours for services to exports. Graham has also held the position of President of the International Federation of Accountants.<\/p>\n

Dame Deirdre Hutton, Chair of the Civil Aviation Authority, said:<\/p>\n

David brings considerable skills and experience of aviation safety to the role, and will be a huge asset to the organisation. I now look forward to working with him and drawing on his experience to consider how we continue to ensure the UK enjoys one of the best aviation safety records in the world.<\/p>\n

The knowledge, skills and experience Graham brings from a highly successful career in the finance sector will be of real benefit to the CAA<\/abbr> in our regulation of UK aviation to protect the interests of consumers. His appointment is good news for the CAA<\/abbr> and I am very much looking forward to working with him.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In addition to his role at the CAA<\/abbr>, Dr King is currently Chair of the Board Safety Review Committee at Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd and is also a visiting professor at Cranfield University, contributing to the university\u2019s accident investigation courses. <\/p>\n

Mr Ward is also currently Chief Commissioner of the Independent Commission for Aid Impact, a body directly accountable to Parliament, which was established to examine the value and effectiveness of the UK\u2019s Official Development Assistance. Graham also has a number of charitable and community interests, including as a member of the Lord Mayor\u2019s Appeal Committee, Vice-Chair of the World Energy Council and a governor of both Dulwich and Goodenough colleges. <\/p>\n

The appointment process for non-executive directors has been run according to the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments (OCPA) guidelines. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. <\/p>\n

All appointments are made on a personal basis, rather than on the basis of affiliations. <\/p>\n

The posts are fully funded by the industry. Both Mr Ward and Dr King\u2019s time commitment to the CAA<\/abbr> will be for 1 day per week, in line with other non-executive members of the authority. The role has a salary of \u00a322,000 per annum, but with additional remuneration for chairing main board committees and participation in appeals hearings.<\/p>\n
