A motorist who claimed to have taken so much Viagra he could not leave the house was just one of a number of excuses from people who failed to tax their car. <\/p>\n

According to information released today (28 July 2013) by DVLA<\/abbr>, motorists caught for not having a tax disc last year used a variety of excuses, which included:<\/p>\n

My mate said that if the cost of the tax is more than what the car\u2019s worth you haven\u2019t got to pay it<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

One motorist claimed to have fallen out of a tree while fruit picking and broke both arms so they could not fill in the necessary forms, while one motorist even blamed their mobile phone. <\/p>\n

Carolyn Williams, DVLA<\/abbr>\u2019s Head of Digital Services, said:<\/p>\n

The vast majority of people tax their car on time but it amazes me to see the excuses people come up with. It\u2019s easier than ever before for people to tax their car and our digital services<\/a> are designed to be used any time of day or night to fit in with people\u2019s lifestyles – so there really is no need for silly excuses.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    My accountant told me I\u2019m due a tax rebate so I didn\u2019t think I needed to pay again this year.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    I was on my way to the Post Office to tax the car and called into the betting shop – there was a horse running at Doncaster called \u2018Don\u2019t Do It\u2019 so I bet on that with my car tax money instead \u2013 it lost.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    The quickest and easiest way to tax a vehicle is to go online<\/a> or \u2018phone 0300 123 4321. It\u2019s a fully automated system and should take no more than 4 minutes. <\/p>\n

    Vehicles must either be taxed or declared off-road \u2013 this is done by making a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN<\/abbr>). <\/p>\n

    DVLA<\/abbr> issues a reminder when a vehicle is due to be taxed or declared SORN<\/abbr>. The reminder quotes a reference number that can be used when taxing or declaring SORN<\/abbr> online or over the \u2018phone line or at a Post Office\u00ae branch. <\/p>\n

    The vehicle can still be taxed or declared SORN<\/abbr> without a reminder by using the document reference number on the V5C<\/abbr> (logbook). <\/p>\n

    If a vehicle is not taxed or declared SORN<\/abbr> the keeper may receive a late licensing penalty. In addition, if the vehicle is seen parked on the public highway it may be clamped, impounded and ultimately disposed of. <\/p>\n
