{"id":22111,"date":"2013-07-30T09:20:00","date_gmt":"2013-07-30T09:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=9c3af9232a3e848090693d0607268f5c"},"modified":"2013-07-30T09:20:00","modified_gmt":"2013-07-30T09:20:00","slug":"press-release-featherstone-new-uk-support-for-worlds-forgotten-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=22111","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Featherstone: new UK support for world\u2019s \u2018forgotten crisis\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The UK will provide \u00a35 million to help hundreds of thousands of people suffering from the humanitarian crisis in the Central African Republic (<abbr title=\"Central African Republic\">CAR<\/abbr>), International Development Minister Lynne Featherstone announced today.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month the UN labelled the situation in the country a \u2018forgotten crisis\u2019. UN appeals for funding have so far met with limited response from the international community and the UK is urging donors to step forward and support humanitarian action in <abbr title=\"Central African Republic\">CAR<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>The UK funding will provide:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>100,000 people with improved water and sanitation, as well as materials to rebuild their homes<\/li>\n<li>250,000 people with access to healthcare<\/li>\n<li>50,000 of the country\u2019s most vulnerable people with emergency nutrition<\/li>\n<li>funding for humanitarian flights so aid workers can reach those stranded in remote areas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lynne Featherstone said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The appalling humanitarian situation in the Central African Republic has affected every man, woman and child in the country. Hundreds of thousands of people have been left without a home or basic services like health, water and education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Britain will not look the other way while millions of the world\u2019s most vulnerable people are suffering. This support will provide a lifeline to the people of <abbr title=\"Central African Republic\">CAR<\/abbr>, helping them to rebuild after months of violence.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The funding will be allocated to the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.icrc.org\">International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)<\/a>, the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wfp.org\/content\/united-nations-humanitarian-air-service-unhas\">United Nations Humanitarian Air Service<\/a> and international NGOs.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"notes-to-editors\">Notes to editors<\/h3>\n<p>4.6 million people \u2013 the entire <abbr title=\"Central African Republic\">CAR<\/abbr> population \u2013 have been affected by the crisis, which was exacerbated by a presidential coup in March.
