{"id":33523,"date":"2013-10-31T16:22:05","date_gmt":"2013-10-31T16:22:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=b057fa175aba1d92447a593e9e4048e6"},"modified":"2013-10-31T16:22:05","modified_gmt":"2013-10-31T16:22:05","slug":"news-story-legislation-strengthens-independent-oversight-of-undercover-police-operations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=33523","title":{"rendered":"News story: Legislation strengthens independent oversight of undercover police operations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The government is amending the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) following a number of serious allegations around historical cases.<\/p>\n<p>It means the Office of Surveillance Commissioners must give prior approval for all undercover deployments which last longer than 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>Policing Minister Damian Green announced the government\u2019s intention to increase the amount of independent supervision and assessment of undercover operations earlier this year.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"new-legislation\">New legislation<\/h2>\n<p>A Home Office spokesperson said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Undercover police operations are vital in the fight against terrorism and serious organised crime.
