There are around 200 civil servants deployed full-time on operations in Afghanistan and several in other unstable locations in the Middle East and North Africa.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/18343\/DMC-10112013-05g.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>The Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph in London [Picture: Harland Quarrington, Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thousands of members of the public also turned up at the Cenotaph which was cleaned and repaired this summer by English Heritage in preparation for this weekend\u2019s service and the First World War centenary commemorations of the next 4 years.<\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.raf.mod.uk\/news\/archive\/festival-of-remembrance-2013-11112013\">Festival of Remembrance took place at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday<\/a> and featured a short film commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Dambusters Raid. <\/p>\n<p>During the festival, Johnny Johnson, the only surviving bomb aimer to have taken part in this most daring and innovative of air raids of the Second World War, was passed the torch of remembrance by former 617 Squadron navigator Squadron Leader Jon Howard. <\/p>\n<p>In Afghanistan <a href=\"\/government\/news\/duke-of-york-and-defence-secretary-pay-respects-at-remembrance-service-in-afghanistan\">soldiers of 7th Armoured Brigade paid tribute to their fallen comrades in a service that took place at Camp Bastion<\/a>. Also in attendance were His Royal Highness The Duke of York and Defence Secretary Philip Hammond.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A serviceman pays his respects at the Plymouth War Memorial \" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/18344\/DR130189044g.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>A serviceman pays his respects at the Plymouth War Memorial [Picture: Leading Airman (Photographer) Joel Rouse, Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Elsewhere, members of the Armed Forces past and present gathered at the Plymouth War Memorial which commemorates 7,251 sailors from the First World War and 15,933 from the Second World War who lost their lives.<\/p>\n<p>In Malta, the crew of HMS Dragon marked Remembrance Sunday by recreating a drumhead-style ceremony using the ship\u2019s bell.  <\/p>\n<p>Dragon is currently making her way home from the Gulf and marked Remembrance Sunday off the coast of Malta \u2013 an island that made huge sacrifices during the Second World War.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An officer lays a wreath\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/18345\/SMG-UNC-20131111-341-238g.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>An officer from RAF St Mawgan lays a wreath at the Newquay War Memorial in Cornwall [Picture: Corporal Tony Rogers RAF, Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the UK, around half of the personnel from RAF St Mawgan supported 21 different remembrance services and 3 parades across Conwall. <\/p>\n<p>They were represented in Padstow, Falmouth, Bodmin, St Mawgan, St Austell, St Wenn, Helston, Wadebridge, St Eval, Marazion, St Just, St Dennis, St Ives, St Columb Minor, Cambourne, Liskeard and St Piran. <\/p>\n<p>HMS Defender marked Remembrance Sunday off the Isle of Wight on her return from operational sea training. <\/p>\n<p>Lieutenant Matthew Harvey led the service in the ship\u2019s hangar before the commanding officer, Commander Philip Nash, laid a wreath directly over the site where Her Majesty\u2019s Submarine Swordfish was sunk on a combat patrol in the English Channel in November 1940 during the Second World War. <\/p>\n<p>200 sailors from mine countermeasures vessels HMS Atherstone, Shoreham, Quorn and Ramsey, together with personnel from the Forward Logistic Site, Fleet Support Unit and the UK Maritime Component Command headquarters, attended a service of remembrance on the jetty at Mina Salman port, Manama, Bahrain.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Deployed RAF personnel\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/18346\/AUAB_UNC_20131109_0173_039g.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>Deployed personnel serving with the Royal Air Force&#8217;s 83 Expeditionary Air Group at a sunset ceremony in the Middle East [Picture: Sergeant Si Pugsley RAF, Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Deployed personnel serving with the RAF\u2019s 83 Expeditionary Air Group held a sunset ceremony at their base in the Middle East and personnel from the Royal Canadian Air Force and US Air Force also laid wreaths to honour the fallen.<\/p>\n<p>Patrolling the northern reaches of the Gulf, the company of HMS Montrose paused to remember those who have given their lives in conflict \u2013 past and present.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Naval personnel prepare to lay a wreath \" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/18348\/20131108-2g.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>HMS Montrose held a memorial service for the crews of 2 Sea King helicopters which crashed on 22 March 2003 in the Gulf [Picture: Leading Airman (Photographer) Alex Knott, Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The frigate came to a standstill at the position where, during Operation Telic on 22 March 2003, 2 Sea King Mk7 helicopters from \u2018A\u2019 Flight, 849 Naval Air Squadron, collided in mid-air and crashed into the sea.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The wreath laid by HMS Daring\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/18347\/MF130156020g.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>HMS Daring honoured the sailors who died when HMS Repulse and HMS Prince of Wales were sunk by Japanese aircraft in 1941 [Picture: Leading Airman (Photographer) Keith Morgan, Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And hundreds of sailors, who died at sea when their ships were sunk by Japanese aircraft in 1941, were honoured by HMS Daring.
