On the evening of 13 November, Julie Chappell<\/a>, Head of the FCO\u2019s Emerging Powers Department and GREAT campaign<\/a>, won the Community Spirits Award at the Women of the Future Awards<\/a>. The Awards recognise successful and inspirational young women in diverse professions across the UK. Julie was the only civil servant to be shortlisted and the competition was tough. After hearing of her achievement, Simon Fraser the Head of the UK Diplomatic Service, sent his congratulations to Julie on a brilliant achievement. <\/p>\n

Speaking after her win Julie said:<\/p>\n

I\u2019m hugely excited and honoured to be chosen for a Woman of the Future award. It has been a huge inspiration and I am really excited about the opportunity it brings to showcase the work of the FCO and the people who work here.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Julie joined the diplomatic service in 1999, and in 2009 was appointed the youngest ever British Ambassador, as HM Ambassador to Guatemala. She has also served in Jordan, Iraq, the US and the Horn of Africa. <\/p>\n

On presenting her award the judges said: <\/p>\n

Julie is courageous, affable, humble and very passionate about what she does \u2013 she has enormous potential.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

As a winner Julie becomes part of the Women of the Future network<\/a>, and will also become a Women of the Future Ambassador, acting as a mentor and role model for school-age girls.<\/p>\n
