{"id":34872,"date":"2013-11-15T13:52:32","date_gmt":"2013-11-15T13:52:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=bc85b79221568e92a14262a464a55f68"},"modified":"2013-11-15T13:52:32","modified_gmt":"2013-11-15T13:52:32","slug":"news-story-border-force-clamps-down-on-illegal-trade-in-endangered-species","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=34872","title":{"rendered":"News story: Border Force clamps down on illegal trade in endangered species"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Seized products include illegal ivory, birds of prey, trophy animals and Chinese medicines containing ingredients such as rhino horn.<\/p>\n<p>There has also been an increase in the number of \u2018body beautiful\u2019 products, such as slimming supplements and face creams, containing caviar being smuggled across the UK border. <\/p>\n<p>During 2012\/13 there were 690 <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=q_6yiEryyss\">seizures<\/a> resulting in a haul of 2.5 million illegal items. Last year there were 501 seizures and 248,770 illegal items.<\/p>\n<p>Immigration Minister Mark Harper said:   <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Organised criminal gangs will smuggle anything if they think there is a profit to be made and animal products can be worth millions of pounds on the black market.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that this trade is contributing to the threat of extinction faced by many endangered species is of no interest to these ruthless traffickers.<\/p>\n<p>Border Force\u2019s specialist officers are world renowned for their excellence in identifying and preventing the trade of illegal animal and plant material.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Officers are working tirelessly with partners in the National Crime Agency, the police and internationally to stamp out this illicit trade.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Successful Border Force seizures during 2012\/13 include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3,890 kilos of medicinal products seized containing extracts from endangered species <\/li>\n<li>326 items of ivory \u2013 since April 2013 alone there\u2019s been 21 seizures of ivory<\/li>\n<li>466 Hermann\u2019s tortoises discovered at Heathrow Airport<\/li>\n<li>1.6 tonnes of tortoise jelly seized at Thames Port container in Kent<\/li>\n<li>750 kilos of endangered corals and 60 clams were discovered in boxes originating from Vietnam <\/li>\n<li>500 kg of face cream containing caviar extract sent from China discovered at Heathrow and Felixstowe <\/li>\n<li>2.3 tonnes of Sandalwood from India declared as handicrafts was found in UK bound for Hong Kong<\/li>\n<li>126,000 pots of \u2018Detonate\u2019 and 15,120 pots of \u2018CRAZE\u2019  &#8211; both nutritional supplements containing orchids were seized at Manchester Airport in a shipment from America<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Border Force are clamping down on international crime groups that make millions of pounds every year smuggling endangered species into the UK<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/34872"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=34872"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/34872\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=34872"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=34872"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=34872"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
