{"id":35065,"date":"2013-11-17T11:14:39","date_gmt":"2013-11-17T11:14:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=a7d04a0d709ddd20204b3be00f9cbfd0"},"modified":"2013-11-17T11:14:39","modified_gmt":"2013-11-17T11:14:39","slug":"news-story-sri-lanka-and-the-commonwealth-heads-of-government-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=35065","title":{"rendered":"News story: Sri Lanka and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The Minister\u2019s schedule took in meetings with the Sri Lankan government and a wide variety of Sri Lanka\u2019s political and civil society.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Swire also played a leading role in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (<abbr title=\"Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting\">CHOGM<\/abbr>) Foreign Minister\u2019s meetings. As the Minister made clear before arriving in Colombo, the Prime Minister, the Foreign Secretary and Mr Swire attended <abbr title=\"Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting\">CHOGM<\/abbr> in Sri Lanka in support of the Commonwealth, but also to allow Britain\u2019s leaders to see what was happening in Sri Lanka regarding human rights, freedom for the media, democracy, and reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister gave speeches at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/commonwealth-business-forum\">Commonwealth Business Forum<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/commonwealth-peoples-forum\">Commonwealth People\u2019s Forum<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/commonwealth-sports-meeting-in-sri-lanka\">Commonwealth Games meeting<\/a> hosted by the Commonwealth Games Federation.<\/p>\n<p>During his programme, the Minister spoke with human rights campaigners and the families of people who have disappeared during and after the war, minority religious leaders and others who talked about their experiences of peace and reconciliation.
