{"id":35158,"date":"2013-11-18T13:24:06","date_gmt":"2013-11-18T13:24:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=5f0d385ce128727642e72438b70349a2"},"modified":"2013-11-18T13:24:06","modified_gmt":"2013-11-18T13:24:06","slug":"news-story-norman-baker-visits-newcastle-to-see-alcohol-levy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=35158","title":{"rendered":"News story: Norman Baker visits Newcastle to see alcohol levy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Crime Prevention Minister Norman Baker has visited Newcastle to discuss the city council\u2019s introduction of the late night levy.<\/p>\n<p>Newcastle is the first local authority in England and Wales to bring in this power, which allows councils to collect a contribution from businesses selling alcohol towards the cost of late-night policing.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"late-night-clean-up\">Late night clean-up<\/h2>\n<p>Under the scheme, licensed premises selling alcohol between midnight and 6am have to pay an annual amount to help offset the cost to the taxpayer of the late night clean-up.<\/p>\n<p>Crime Prevention Minister Norman Baker said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The coalition government is taking a wide range of action to tackle alcohol-related crime and disorder. This includes introducing a ban on the worst cases of very cheap and harmful alcohol sales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We have given local areas the power to restrict the sale of alcohol in the early hours and ensure those who profit from a late night licence help pay towards the costs of policing.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Norman Baker added:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019d like to congratulate Newcastle City Council on being the first authority to introduce a late night levy.<\/p>\n<p>Alcohol-fuelled crime costs around \u00a311 billion a year in England and Wales and this is clearly an unacceptable burden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Alcohol, if misused, can cause real harm.
