{"id":37555,"date":"2014-01-07T17:16:00","date_gmt":"2014-01-07T17:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=69e9c69c7a0d616ad58f0b6e9480c98b"},"modified":"2014-01-07T17:16:00","modified_gmt":"2014-01-07T17:16:00","slug":"news-story-non-stop-missions-for-navy-search-and-rescue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=37555","title":{"rendered":"News story: Non-stop missions for Navy search and rescue"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The foul weather which lashed Britain almost non-stop over the festive period led to the Royal Navy\u2019s search and rescue helicopters being called to action more than 2-dozen times.<\/p>\n<p>In doing so the fliers from <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.royalnavy.mod.uk\/The-Fleet\/Air-Stations\/RNAS-Culdrose\">Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose<\/a> in western Cornwall and <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.royalnavy.mod.uk\/The-Fleet\/Shore-Establishments\/HMS-Gannet\">HMS Gannet<\/a> in Prestwick, near Ayr, saved or helped more than 20 fishermen, stranded walkers and medical cases.<\/p>\n<p>Rescue 193, the duty <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.royalnavy.mod.uk\/The-Fleet\/Aircraft\/Helicopters\/Sea-King-Mk5\">Sea King<\/a> of <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.royalnavy.mod.uk\/The-Fleet\/Aircraft\/Naval-Air-Squadrons\/771\">771 Naval Air Squadron<\/a> at Culdrose, lifted off the tarmac 17 times between Christmas Eve and 6 January, helping 7 people in the process.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"771 Naval Air Squadron conducting winching drills \" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/20741\/CU120084026g.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>771 Naval Air Squadron conducting winching drills during night training (library image) [Picture: Leading Airman (Photographer) Dave Sterratt, Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Their colleagues at Prestwick launched on 10 occasions between Christmas Day and 3 January; fourteen people \u2013 and 2 dogs \u2013 have Gannet to thank for their efforts:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The last few days of 2013 and the beginning of the new year have been pretty busy for the duty crews at HMS Gannet,\u201d said the unit\u2019s commanding officer Lieutenant Commander Andy Drodge.<\/p>\n<p>With Scotland rarely escaping the grips of stormy weather, some of the flying conditions have been quite tricky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Between high winds lashing the coastal areas and more wintry conditions further inland, as well as persistent low cloud, our crews have been challenged, but have always risen to the challenge and completed the job successfully.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile in Cornwall, 9 people have been assisted by the 771 Squadron rescuers \u2013 with the final days of Christmas and first days of 2014 proving to be particularly challenging thanks to the battering the West Country has taken in a succession of winter storms.<\/p>\n<p>A French fisherman was winched off the Mon Briez south of Fowey on 6 January in conditions described by the squadron\u2019s Lieutenant Commander Andy Watts as \u2018a rescue at the limits of the aircraft and crew\u2019.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Royal Navy search and rescue Sea King helicopters \" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/20742\/NE130068084g.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>Royal Navy search and rescue Sea King helicopters at HMS Gannet (library image) [Picture: Chief Petty Officer Airman (Photographer) Thomas McDonald, Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The casualty was safely taken to hospital in Truro, while the previous day a burns victim had to be flown from Perranuthnoe, near Penzance, to Bristol. <\/p>\n<p>It took the Sea King 3 hours to return to base \u2013 normal flying time would be about an hour \u2013 as it battled 50-knot headwinds and had to stop at Chivenor in North Devon to refuel.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The rescue efforts put in by all the Royal Navy\u2019s search and rescue assets over this period has been immense,\u201d said Commander Andy Rose, Commander Sea King Force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">To pick just one example, 771 Squadron were involved in a very difficult rescue effort in extreme conditions 200 miles south-west of the Isles of Scilly on Christmas Eve that eventually saw a merchant vessel get the stricken sailors to safety;
