{"id":37633,"date":"2014-01-09T14:45:00","date_gmt":"2014-01-09T14:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=affea81324626b7b3612233fe79ae939"},"modified":"2014-01-09T14:45:00","modified_gmt":"2014-01-09T14:45:00","slug":"news-story-uk-destroyer-completes-russian-task-force-escort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=37633","title":{"rendered":"News story: Destroyer meets Russian task force along UK coastline"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>HMS Defender, one of the UK\u2019s newest and most powerful Type 45 destroyers, began her 700-mile journey from Portsmouth to the north east of Scotland on 19 December 2013 to meet the Russian task group.<\/p>\n<p>As the fleet ready escort, <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.royalnavy.mod.uk\/The-Fleet\/Ships\/Destroyers\/Type-45-Destroyers\/HMS-Defender\">HMS Defender<\/a> was the Royal Navy\u2019s high readiness warship over Christmas and the New Year, meaning she stands ready to respond to a wide range of short notice tasks from search and rescue duties to maritime security patrols.<\/p>\n<p>The Portsmouth-based destroyer sailed through high sea states and storm force winds to welcome the group of 6 vessels, including a 65,000-tonne aircraft carrier. Due to bad weather, the Russian fleet anchored in the Moray Firth before heading down the east coast of the UK. As a sign of the friendship between the 2 navies, goodwill messages were exchanged between the ships on New Year\u2019s Eve.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister for International Security Strategy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/people\/andrew-murrison\">Dr Andrew Murrison<\/a>, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The UK and Russia enjoy a good relationship, and the deployment of HMS Defender, one of our newest destroyers, as fleet ready escort underlines the Royal Navy\u2019s modern-day utility in UK interests.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"HMS Defender returns to a warm welcome in Portsmouth\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/20786\/FX140006118.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>HMS Defender returns to a warm welcome in Portsmouth on 9 January 2014 [Picture: Leading Airman (Photographer) Simmo Simpson, Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>HMS Defender\u2019s commanding officer, Commander Phil Nash, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>As a maritime nation, the security of the seas around our coastline remains vital to our national interests.
