{"id":37797,"date":"2014-01-15T11:29:00","date_gmt":"2014-01-15T11:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=a2a90355aca6136e930d503f5c85308b"},"modified":"2014-01-15T17:03:13","modified_gmt":"2014-01-15T17:03:13","slug":"press-release-uks-protected-food-names-boost-eu-economy-and-increase-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=37797","title":{"rendered":"Press release: UK\u2019s Protected Food Names boost EU economy and increase jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Updated:<\/em> Added a link to google map.<\/p>\n<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>More than 60 unique British foods have now achieved protected status to help safeguard these iconic products and deliver a major boost to the economy. <\/p>\n<p>Anglesey Sea Salt, West Country Beef and West Country Lamb have all today had their Protected Food Name (<abbr title=\"Protected Food Names\">PFN<\/abbr>) status confirmed by the European Union \u2013 joining the ranks of some of the UK\u2019s best-loved foods such as Welsh Lamb, Melton Mowbray Pork Pies and Stilton cheese. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s estimated that these food items helped contribute more than \u00a3900 million to the European economy. <\/p>\n<p>Sixty-two of these items have now gained the prestigious award which protects their authenticity and origin from imitation and fraud. Defra is working with the food industry to inspire further applications for Protected Food Name status. <\/p>\n<p>Farming Minister George Eustice said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Exceeding the 60th registration is an achievement to be proud of. Legal protection of the quality, provenance and reputation of British food will help small businesses make a valuable economic contribution both locally and nationally. Consumers can now be 100% sure that when they buy Halen Mon Anglesey Sea Salt they are getting a product which has been harvested and packed in Anglesey.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Peter Baber, chairman of Meat South West, said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We are delighted to be awarded <abbr title=\"Protected Geographical Indication\">PGI<\/abbr> status for West Country beef and lamb. We look forward to working with farmers and processors in the south west region to market top quality beef and lamb under the West Country <abbr title=\"Protected Geographical Indication\">PGI<\/abbr> banner.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"notes\">Notes<\/h2>\n<p>In 1993 EU legislation came into force which provides for a system for the protection of food names on a geographical or traditional recipe basis.<\/p>\n<p>The EU Protected Food Name (<abbr title=\"Protected Food Names\">PFN<\/abbr>) scheme highlights regional and traditional foods whose authenticity and origin can be guaranteed. The product is awarded one of three marks: Protected Designation of Origin (<abbr title=\"Protected Designation of Origin\">PDO<\/abbr>); Protected Geographical Indication (<abbr title=\"Protected Geographical Indication\">PGI<\/abbr>); and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (<abbr title=\"Traditional Speciality Guaranteed\">TSG<\/abbr>). We\u2019ve produced a simple <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/defragovuk\/11965137164\/\">visual guide to the Protected Food Name Scheme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Producers who register their products for protection benefit from having a raised awareness of their product throughout Europe.
