{"id":37878,"date":"2014-01-17T11:07:34","date_gmt":"2014-01-17T11:07:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=782230039642ff5aeb8f5b965825eb41"},"modified":"2014-01-17T11:07:34","modified_gmt":"2014-01-17T11:07:34","slug":"news-story-maybe-its-because-im-a-londonerthat-i-leave-tax-so-late","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=37878","title":{"rendered":"News story: Maybe it\u2019s because I\u2019m a Londoner\u2026that I leave tax so late"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Around one in nine (11%) of the 560,000 people in Inner London who had to send in a tax return last year didn\u2019t do so by the relevant deadline \u2013 31 October for paper returns and 31 January for online submissions.<\/p>\n<p>The one million taxpayers in Outer London were more punctual, with one in 11 (9%) failing to meet the deadline, but they were still the second worst offenders. The tardiest taxpayers outside of London were in the North West of England, with 8% of their 890,000 returns failing to meet the deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Taxpayers in the rest of the English regions fared better. The most punctual were in the South West, with only 6% of their one million tax returns arriving late. The other English regions, as well as Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, all registered 7% of late tax returns, which was the UK national average.<\/p>\n<p>HM Revenue and Custom\u2019s (<abbr title=\"HM Revenue and Customs\">HMRC<\/abbr>) Director General of Personal Tax, Ruth Owen, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re from London, Livingston, Lisburn or Llandudno, the consequences of missing the tax return deadline are the same \u2013 an automatic \u00a3100 late-filing penalty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The longer you delay, the more you have to pay. So if you still have to send us your tax return, take action now.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Anyone with an outstanding 2012 to 2013 tax return must send it online, and pay any tax they owe, by 31 January.<\/p>\n<p>Visit <abbr title=\"HM Revenue and Customs\">HMRC<\/abbr>\u2019s website at <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hmrc.gov.uk\">www.hmrc.gov.uk<\/a> to register for Self Assessment and file your online tax return for free. Using a search engine to find <abbr title=\"HM Revenue and Customs\">HMRC<\/abbr>\u2019s online filing service can produce results which include third party websites that charge to file on your behalf.
