{"id":37991,"date":"2014-01-21T09:06:00","date_gmt":"2014-01-21T09:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=d13eac9715905c3d9bf566788b14a8f2"},"modified":"2014-01-21T17:14:10","modified_gmt":"2014-01-21T17:14:10","slug":"news-story-decision-aid-helps-men-make-informed-choices-about-aaa-screening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=37991","title":{"rendered":"News story: Decision aid helps men make informed choices about AAA screening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Updated:<\/em> Change to editor&#8217;s notes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/aaa.screening.nhs.uk\/decisionaid\"><abbr title=\"abdominal aortic aneurysm\">AAA<\/abbr> screening patient decision aid<\/a> website aims to help men aged 65 and over understand the potential benefits and risks of screening so they can decide if they want to be screened based on the available evidence.<\/p>\n<p>The NHS <abbr title=\"abdominal aortic aneurysm\">AAA<\/abbr> Screening Programme invites all men registered with <abbr title=\"General practitioner (family doctor)\">GPs<\/abbr> for ultrasound screening during the year they turn 65 while men over 65 who have not previously been screened can self-refer. <abbr title=\"General practitioner (family doctor)\">GPs<\/abbr> are informed of all screening outcomes for men on their lists.<\/p>\n<p>Informed decision making is particularly important for <abbr title=\"abdominal aortic aneurysm\">AAA<\/abbr> screening given the risk that a man could die or suffer serious complications following surgery to repair a screen-detected aneurysm.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Anne Mackie, Director of Programmes for the UK National Screening Committee, said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We need to explain screening so the public can make informed choices \u2013 understanding there may be risks as well as benefits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The evidence clearly shows that screening 65-year-old men at a national level will save lives. However, for individual men it can lead to important decisions about having surgery, which has an inherent risk. The <abbr title=\"abdominal aortic aneurysm\">AAA<\/abbr> screening patient decision aid is another resource that will help to ensure men are given information in a supportive way that enables them to choose to be screened \u2013 or not.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The decision aid has been developed by the NHS <abbr title=\"abdominal aortic aneurysm\">AAA<\/abbr> Screening Programme in conjunction with the National Shared Decision Making Programme and is based on data from the largest randomised trial \u2013 the Multicentre Aneurysm Screening Study (MASS). A printable pdf version of the resource is also available on request for people who do not have internet access.<\/p>\n<p>The NHS <abbr title=\"abdominal aortic aneurysm\">AAA<\/abbr> Screening Programme aims to keep primary care workload to a minimum.
