{"id":38063,"date":"2014-01-22T16:09:58","date_gmt":"2014-01-22T16:09:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=3c03b9a266f1c72b33574ed63935645d"},"modified":"2014-01-22T16:09:58","modified_gmt":"2014-01-22T16:09:58","slug":"news-story-science-students-do-a-bang-up-job-in-assisting-mod","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=38063","title":{"rendered":"News story: Science students do a bang-up job in assisting MOD"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dstl.gov.uk\/\">Defence Science and Technology Laboratory<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Defence Science and Technology Laboratory\">Dstl<\/abbr>), which provides services for the Ministry of Defence, has been mentoring 2 forensic science students in explosive materials research.<\/p>\n<p>The students, Holly Yu from the University of Strathclyde and Leo Salvia of King\u2019s College London, have been working with <abbr title=\"Defence Science and Technology Laboratory\">Dstl<\/abbr>\u2019s forensic exploitation group as part of their Master of Science (<abbr title=\"Master of Science\">MSc<\/abbr>) research projects. <\/p>\n<p>Working over a 3-month period, Holly investigated the degradation of trace (invisible) levels of trinitrotoluene (<abbr title=\"trinitrotoluene\">TNT<\/abbr>) in various solvents as part of her <abbr title=\"Master of Science\">MSc<\/abbr> in forensic science under the supervision of Professor Niamh Nic Daeid at Strathclyde.<\/p>\n<p>She said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Trace residues often provide valuable forensic evidence in crimes involving the misuse of explosives. It is extremely important that forensic scientists understand, and are able to mitigate against, any sampling and storage issues that could adversely affect the ability to identify explosives traces prior to laboratory analysis.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Holly examined the degradation of <abbr title=\"trinitrotoluene\">TNT<\/abbr> under common pre-analysis storage conditions and found that increased temperatures and exposure to UV light could increase degradation rates. <\/p>\n<p>As a result, Holly recommended that \u2018explosives trace samples should be transported to laboratories in cool conditions, shielded from UV light, before being immediately stored in a freezer until processing and analysis is possible\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Leo\u2019s investigation of mass spectrometry is part of a broader programme of activity to enhance the capabilities of <abbr title=\"Defence Science and Technology Laboratory\">Dstl<\/abbr>\u2019s forensic explosives laboratory (<abbr title=\"forensic explosives laboratory\">FEL<\/abbr>). <\/p>\n<p>High performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry is commonly used to analyse specific explosive materials, but currently <abbr title=\"forensic explosives laboratory\">FEL<\/abbr> does not have a method that facilitates the analysis of a wider range of possible explosives analytes. <\/p>\n<p>Leo\u2019s study was performed with Dr Leon Barron at King\u2019s College London and focused on the conditions required to identify 19 common organic explosives in a single chemical analysis. <\/p>\n<p>Such an outcome would significantly strengthen <abbr title=\"forensic explosives laboratory\">FEL<\/abbr>\u2019s capability to screen forensic samples more efficiently for a wide range of explosives.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on his work, Leo said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The outcomes facilitated the streamlining of detection methods currently used into 1 combined solution. Hopefully, this will add to the efficiency of explosives analysis at <abbr title=\"forensic explosives laboratory\">FEL<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><abbr title=\"Defence Science and Technology Laboratory\">Dstl<\/abbr>\u2019s Dr Matthew Beardah worked closely with both students on their projects and praised the quality and contributions of their research:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Holly\u2019s work is of considerable benefit in enhancing our understanding of particular characteristics of <abbr title=\"trinitrotoluene\">TNT<\/abbr>, especially as it relates to the storage of <abbr title=\"trinitrotoluene\">TNT<\/abbr> in solution,\u201d he said. \u201cThis in turn should lead to improved reproducibility of standards and thus improved accuracy of casework.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The ongoing work at King\u2019s College London, of which Leo\u2019s research is a major part, will directly feed into a step-change in capability at <abbr title=\"forensic explosives laboratory\">FEL<\/abbr> by introducing high resolution mass spectrometry to casework.
