{"id":38262,"date":"2014-01-28T13:08:00","date_gmt":"2014-01-28T13:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=195095dc5f7d610cc692af5f405b0825"},"modified":"2014-01-28T13:08:00","modified_gmt":"2014-01-28T13:08:00","slug":"news-story-british-soldier-receives-historic-field-promotion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=38262","title":{"rendered":"News story: British soldier receives historic field promotion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Rifleman Gigar Das, from 1st Battalion The Rifles (<abbr title=\"1st Battalion The Rifles\">1 RIFLES<\/abbr>), was honoured a promotion in the field for his service to Mali while serving as part of the EU Training Team.<\/p>\n<p>The Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Peter Wall, accompanied the head of the French Army, General Bertrand Ract-Madoux, to witness soldiers from <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mod.uk\/infantry\/regiments\/24711.aspx\"><abbr title=\"1st Battalion The Rifles\">1 RIFLES<\/abbr><\/a> delivering infantry training to their Malian counterparts. <\/p>\n<p>Both generals were hugely impressed with Rifleman Das as they observed him conducting a lesson in marksmanship principles. Astounded to see that the soldier was a rifleman, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/people\/general-sir-peter-wall\">Chief of the General Staff<\/a> decided to promote him there and then, after briefly consulting with Rifleman Das\u2019s company commander.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rifleman Gigar Das receives his lance corporal's stripe\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/21468\/LCpl_Daz_promoted_by_General_Ract_Madoux_CGS_i.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>General Sir Peter Wall (right) watches as Rifleman Gigar Das receives his lance corporal&#8217;s stripe from General Bertrand Ract-Madoux [Picture: Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In front of the entire EU training team, Rifleman Das, who has served in the Army for 8 years and deployed on 3 tours of Afghanistan and 1 of Iraq, was presented with his lance corporal\u2019s stripe by the head of the French Army.<\/p>\n<p>On receiving his promotion, Lance Corporal Das said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">I wasn\u2019t expecting anything like this to happen today when I got out of bed this morning. It is extremely unexpected and I couldn\u2019t be more proud of this honour.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The newly-promoted lance corporal\u2019s company commander, Major Sam Cates, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I am extremely proud of Lance Corporal Das, this is absolutely no more than he deserves.
