{"id":38416,"date":"2014-01-31T10:54:08","date_gmt":"2014-01-31T10:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=951fda1b4a8789e5453c4b3d91db76e4"},"modified":"2014-01-31T10:54:08","modified_gmt":"2014-01-31T10:54:08","slug":"news-story-dambusters-final-flight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=38416","title":{"rendered":"News story: Dambusters final flight"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>More than 70 years after its creation, the <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr>\u2019s 617 Squadron, known as \u2018The Dambusters\u2019, has completed its last operational mission as a Tornado squadron with a flight in the skies over Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>This last flight was a mission in support of coalition troops that involved providing protection and relaying information from above directly to commanders on the ground; a task that has now been handed over to No 2 (Army Co-operation) Squadron from <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr> Marham. <\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.raf.mod.uk\/organisation\/617squadron.cfm\">617 Squadron<\/a> is due to disband on 1 April, but will reform as the <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr>\u2019s first <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.f35.com\/\">Lightning II<\/a> squadron in 2018.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A 617 Squadron Tornado aircraft at Kandahar Airfield\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/21625\/AUAB_UNC_20131201_0193_096.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>A 617 Squadron Tornado aircraft at Kandahar Airfield [Picture: Sergeant Si Pugsley <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr>, Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now their mission in Afghanistan is over, Wing Commander David Arthurton will bring the Dambusters back home to <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr> Lossiemouth. He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>It is fitting that this milestone event occurred on operations, delivering decisive air power much as our forebears did in 1943. Back then the squadron was employed on offensive operations whereas today we\u2019re trying to set the conditions for enduring security and peace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">I think there are many parallels \u2013 the team spirit that existed back then endures to this day and I think the focus on getting the job done is exactly the same.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>During their final operational tour, the Dambusters flew 188 missions, clocking up more than 1,500 flying hours supported by 11,352 engineering man-hours. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Squadron Leader Mark Jackson carries out pre-flight checks\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/21626\/AUAB_UNC_20140129_0021_028.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>Squadron Leader Mark Jackson carries out pre-flight checks before his last operational flight aboard a Tornado [Picture: Sergeant Si Pugsley <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr>, Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The pilot selected to lead the final flight, Squadron Leader Mark Jackson, said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>As I stepped down from the aircraft for the last time, my emotions were mixed. Tinged with sadness is an overwhelming sense of achievement for what the squadron have accomplished.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">I am sure that the original Dambusters felt a similar poignancy at the end of their iconic raid and would echo how very proud I am of those that serve today.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Dambusters have a legacy of low-level flying from their origins in the Second World War. Hopefully in some way we\u2019re honouring the original Dambusters by continuing to be on operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Even though we\u2019re due to disband in March this year, we will reform as the <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr>\u2019s first Lightning II Squadron in 2018.
