{"id":38427,"date":"2014-01-31T12:52:05","date_gmt":"2014-01-31T12:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=fdb1179e6733244a013b65f4f050af32"},"modified":"2014-01-31T12:52:05","modified_gmt":"2014-01-31T12:52:05","slug":"news-story-air-cadets-gliding-school-opens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=38427","title":{"rendered":"News story: Air cadets&#8217; gliding school opens"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The new school, which houses the world\u2019s largest fleet of gliders, will be headed up by a reservist for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>The No 2 Flying Training School (<abbr title=\"Flying Training School\">FTS<\/abbr>) becomes a new centre of excellence in which young people can win their wings; often before they pass their driving test.<\/p>\n<p>With its headquarters at <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr> Syerston in Nottinghamshire, No 2 <abbr title=\"Flying Training School\">FTS<\/abbr> will oversee the gliding training programme for up to 45,000 air cadets aged between 13 and 19.  <\/p>\n<p>The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Andrew Pulford, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>No 2 <abbr title=\"Flying Training School\">FTS<\/abbr> has a long and distinguished unit history; I am delighted that it has become the new home of cadet gliding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The reformation of No 2 <abbr title=\"Flying Training School\">FTS<\/abbr> is not just another milestone for Royal Air Force air cadet gliding, it is also one for our reserve organisation, with John Middleton becoming the first full-time reserve service officer at the rank of group captain in a flying command appointment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Group Captain John Cunningham hands over to Group Captain John Middleton\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/21648\/CRN-UNCLASS-20140131-064-002.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>Group Captain John Cunningham of No 3 Flying Training School hands over responsibility for <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr> air cadet gliding to Group Captain John Middleton [Picture: Paul Saxby, SERCO Media Services]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Group Captain John Middleton said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I feel honoured to have the opportunity to take air cadet gliding forward into a new era, and thank all at No 3 Flying Training School for taking excellent care of air cadet gliding in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">My long-term aim is to mature <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr> Syerston into the air cadet centre for aviation excellence, whilst maintaining the high safety standards of air cadet gliding.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Group Captain Middleton is the first <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr> full-time reserve service officer to be authorised as a \u2018delivery duty holder\u2019; the term attached to responsibility for flying.
