{"id":44313,"date":"2014-06-27T10:46:00","date_gmt":"2014-06-27T10:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=ae839fcd16c4aa193e82eb2684718afe"},"modified":"2014-06-27T10:46:00","modified_gmt":"2014-06-27T10:46:00","slug":"news-story-the-glasgow-school-of-art-to-receive-5-million-from-uk-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=44313","title":{"rendered":"News story: The Glasgow School of Art to receive \u00a35 million from UK government"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, today (27 June 2014) announced that the government will provide \u00a35 million pounds to The Glasgow School of Art (<abbr title=\"The Glasgow School of Art\">GSA<\/abbr>) Mackintosh Appeal.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"The Glasgow School of Art\">GSA<\/abbr> was founded in 1845 as one of the first government schools of design. It is widely recognised as one of Europe\u2019s foremost university-level institutions for creative education and research in fine art, design and architecture.<\/p>\n<p>The fire, on 23 May, damaged the 1907-1909 section of the internationally significant Mackintosh Building. The building was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, one of the School\u2019s most distinguished alumni, in the late 19th century. It\u2019s one of Glasgow \u2013 and Scotland\u2019s and the UK\u2019s \u2013 most iconic and best known buildings and was judged to be best building of the past 175 years in a nationwide poll run by the Royal Institute of British Architects.<\/p>\n<p>On 18 June the <abbr title=\"The Glasgow School of Art\">GSA<\/abbr> formally launched the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/gsapress.blogspot.co.uk\/2014\/06\/the-mackintosh-appeal-launched-and-two.html\">Mackintosh Appeal<\/a>, with Brad Pitt and Peter Capaldi amongst its trustees, and aims to raise around \u00a320 million to support the institution in the work that needs to be undertaken following the fire.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The Glasgow School of Art is one of Glasgow\u2019s great institutions. The response to the fire from people across the world has been phenomenal.<\/p>\n<p>I am delighted to be able to announce that the UK government will be providing \u00a35 million to the Mackintosh Appeal to help the <abbr title=\"The Glasgow School of Art\">GSA<\/abbr> recover and then continue to thrive. It is a beautiful building of international importance so it is right that the UK government should make a contribution to its restoration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We will work with The Glasgow School of Art to ensure that the funding is provided at the most appropriate time to meet their needs.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Professor Tom Inns, Director of The Glasgow School of Art said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The UK government\u2019s funding announcement is a huge boost to the <abbr title=\"The Glasgow School of Art\">GSA<\/abbr> Development Trust\u2019s Mackintosh Appeal.<\/p>\n<p>We are determined to restore the building to its former glory, as the inspirational home for the <abbr title=\"The Glasgow School of Art\">GSA<\/abbr>\u2019s creative talent and for the delight of visitors from across the UK and the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The UK government\u2019s support will help us enormously in our efforts to rebuild, and to ensure we can continue to operate at the highest level internationally, bringing the UK\u2019s creative talent to the world and allowing the world to understand the unique contribution of Mackintosh.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Colin Grassie, Chairman of The <abbr title=\"The Glasgow School of Art\">GSA<\/abbr> Development Trust said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We are delighted with this significant boost from the UK government, reflecting as it does the recognition of the reach and importance of The Glasgow School of Art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">That enthusiasm has also been seen in countless donations and messages of support that we have received globally since The Mackintosh Appeal began.
