Mr Moazzam Malik has been appointed Her Majesty\u2019s Ambassador to the Republic of Indonesia, the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), and non-resident Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste. He succeeds Mr Mark Canning CMG who will be retiring from the Diplomatic Service. Mr Malik will take up his appointment in October 2014.<\/p>\n

Prior to joining the FCO in 2014, Mr Malik held a number of senior positions at the Department for International Development. Most recently he led the UK\u2019s support in Western Asia and the Middle East, working closely with colleagues across the UK Government and international partners including the UN, World Bank, Asian Development Bank and IMF. He has been closely involved in the region, including responding to the 2004 tsunami and 2008 cyclone in Burma. He served as Principal Private Secretary to two Secretaries of State, including during the G8 Gleneagles Summit. An economist by background, Mr Malik has also worked in the academic, private and not for profit sectors.<\/p>\n

On his appointment, Mr Malik said:<\/p>\n

Many commentators believe that the 21st century will be the \u2018Asian Century\u2019. Indonesia and the South East Asia region are central to this vision. Building on the excellent relationships already in place, I look forward to working with Indonesia\u2019s new Government and the ASEAN region to build prosperity, enhance political stability, and tackle global challenges in the interests of the people of the region and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
