{"id":44583,"date":"2014-07-03T15:26:00","date_gmt":"2014-07-03T15:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=2ce546b41b7b632ef8f8412d2f1a7e60"},"modified":"2014-07-07T09:56:13","modified_gmt":"2014-07-07T09:56:13","slug":"news-story-new-raf-reapers-take-to-the-skies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=44583","title":{"rendered":"News story: New RAF Reapers take to the skies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Updated:<\/em> Correctly credited second photographer<\/p>\n<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The additional Reaper aircraft are flying from Kandahar Airfield to gather vital intelligence in support of Afghan, UK and International Security Assistance Force (<abbr title=\"International Security Assistance Force\">ISAF<\/abbr>) troops on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>The deployment of 5 new Reapers means there are now twice as many in Afghanistan, operating alongside the British Army\u2019s Hermes 450 unmanned air systems.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An RAF Reaper is delivered\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/28158\/AUAB_UNC_20140403_038_003.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>An <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr> Reaper is delivered, in kit form, for assembly at Kandahar Airfield [Picture: Sergeant Ross Tilly <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr>, Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.raf.mod.uk\/equipment\/reaper.cfm\">Reaper<\/a> will play a vital role in securing internal security in Afghanistan once allied forces draw down from the country later this year. <\/p>\n<p>Monitoring areas of interest for a considerable period of time, Reapers provide real-time feedback, allowing the ground crew to conduct a detailed assessment of any target and the environment they are operating in to minimise the risk of civilian casualties or unnecessary damage to property.<\/p>\n<p>Although their primary role is gathering intelligence and providing surveillance and reconnaissance support to ground forces, Reaper can also be armed with laser-guided bombs and Hellfire missiles when the situation demands it.<\/p>\n<p>In over 54,000 hours of operations using Reaper in Afghanistan, only 459 weapons have been fired, which is less than one weapon for every 120 hours of flying. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Unboxing the fuselage\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/28159\/AUAB_UNC_20140403_038_027.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>Unboxing the fuselage of an <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr> Reaper at Kandahar Airfield [Picture: Sergeant Ross Tilly <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr>, Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology, Philip Dunne, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">These new aircraft give the <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr> enhanced force protection capability in support of UK, <abbr title=\"International Security Assistance Force\">ISAF<\/abbr> and Afghan troops. He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>These aircraft will support UK, <abbr title=\"International Security Assistance Force\">ISAF<\/abbr> and Afghan forces as they work to protect the people of Afghanistan.
