{"id":44763,"date":"2014-07-09T09:09:14","date_gmt":"2014-07-09T09:09:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=6fdc1aec11355ad0d660abfa713ff9c8"},"modified":"2014-07-09T09:09:14","modified_gmt":"2014-07-09T09:09:14","slug":"news-story-a-road-revolution-for-the-21st-century","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=44763","title":{"rendered":"News story: A road revolution for the 21st century"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>New technology, better infrastructure and reforming how roads are maintained in the future was at the heart of Transport Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/building-better-roads\">Patrick McLoughlin\u2019s speech to the construction industry today<\/a> (9 July 2014). <\/p>\n<p>Outlining the government\u2019s vision for the road network at the New Civil Engineer\u2019s conference, the Transport Secretary set out how congestion and pollution can be tackled in the future. He made clear that building new roads is not always the right solution to cutting congestion \u2013 but about thinking differently, using better data on traffic flow, and making targeted road improvements to better roads for motorists. <\/p>\n<p>The Transport Secretary also set out how the government\u2019s commitment to tripling the amount spent on road improvements to over \u00a33 billion a year by 2021 was also essential for an efficient future road network.  The reformation of the Highways Agency into a government-owned company is predicted to save at least \u00a32.4 billion over the next 10 years, which &#8211; along with secure government funding &#8211; will help to put an end to stop-start investment and strengthen England\u2019s road network. <\/p>\n<p>The Transport Secretary also called on the industry to make sure they have their say.  He said it was vital that we have the \u2018right people, with the right skills\u2019 to implement the government\u2019s \u00a324 billion investment plan for the road network. <\/p>\n<p>Patrick McLoughlin said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We need more skilled workers. You are the experts and understand how fast the road landscape is changing. We want to hear from you and how together we can make things better.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Later this year the Department for Transport will publish a long-term \u2018roads investment strategy\u2019 to support the government\u2019s economic ambitions for the road network.
