{"id":45425,"date":"2014-07-22T13:25:17","date_gmt":"2014-07-22T13:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=f49f4fb6ee7c09f96a8ece481051cbaf"},"modified":"2014-07-22T13:25:17","modified_gmt":"2014-07-22T13:25:17","slug":"news-story-chancellor-announces-additional-5-million-for-the-glasgow-school-of-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=45425","title":{"rendered":"News story: Chancellor announces additional \u00a35 million for the Glasgow School of Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/chancellors-speech-to-the-commonwealth-games-business-summit\">Speaking at the Commonwealth Games Business Conference<\/a> in Glasgow today (22 July 2014), the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, announced an additional \u00a35 million of funding from the UK government to the Glasgow School of Art (<abbr title=\"Glasgow School of Art\">GSA<\/abbr>). This \u00a35 million will contribute towards the costs of creating its Graduate and Research Centre.<\/p>\n<p>The additional funding follows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/the-glasgow-school-of-art-to-receive-5-million-from-uk-government\">an announcement in June<\/a> by Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander that the UK government would provide \u00a35 million towards the Mackintosh appeal, set-up to support the <abbr title=\"Glasgow School of Art\">GSA<\/abbr> to repair damage to the Mackintosh building, caused by a fire. <\/p>\n<p>The UK government recognises that one of the greatest impacts on the <abbr title=\"Glasgow School of Art\">GSA<\/abbr> would be the loss of momentum towards its ambition to create a revolutionary Graduate and Research Centre.  This is why it has committed to contributing \u00a310 million to the <abbr title=\"Glasgow School of Art\">GSA<\/abbr>, to help it recover its damaged heritage and build its ambitious future.<\/p>\n<p>The creation of a Graduate and Research Centre is a key part of the <abbr title=\"Glasgow School of Art\">GSA<\/abbr>\u2019s campus redevelopment which will see it create one of the leading higher education campuses for learning and research in the visual creative disciplines. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the Commonwealth Games Business Conference in Glasgow, the Chancellor said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The people of Glasgow and many people far beyond were horrified when a few weeks ago fire ripped through the Art School, gutting its priceless library.<\/p>\n<p>The UK government has already made a \u00a35 million contribution to the Mackintosh Appeal to help ensure that the building is restored to its former glory.<\/p>\n<p>And we are today making an additional \u00a35 million contribution to support the School\u2019s new Graduate and Research Centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Protecting the school\u2019s strong heritage and equipping it for the future\u2026 at the forefront of Scotland\u2019s creative industries\u2026 an institution secure in its position of world renown.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Professor Tom Inns, Director of The Glasgow School of Art said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We are extremely grateful to the UK government for this support which recognises both the importance of research in creative disciplines to the future of the British economy, and the international profile of The Glasgow School of Art as a leading centre of studio-based creative education.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"Glasgow School of Art\">GSA<\/abbr> has one of the largest research communities in the visual creative disciplines in the UK.
