{"id":45632,"date":"2014-07-25T11:17:00","date_gmt":"2014-07-25T11:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=448163fdf2e53a6d4884b1442c6dbe92"},"modified":"2014-07-25T11:17:00","modified_gmt":"2014-07-25T11:17:00","slug":"news-story-business-leader-to-get-better-deals-for-mod-contracts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=45632","title":{"rendered":"News story: Business leader to get better deals for MOD contracts"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Jeremy Newman, who has experience in both the private and public sector, has been selected to chair the Single Source Regulations Office (<abbr title=\"Single Source Regulations Office\">SSRO<\/abbr>) which is a non-departmental public body responsible for regulating single-source procurement by <abbr title=\"Ministry of Defence\">MOD<\/abbr>. <\/p>\n<p>The specialist nature of the work of the armed forces means that <abbr title=\"Ministry of Defence\">MOD<\/abbr> often has to award contracts without competition either because there is only one supplier or for reasons of national security.  <\/p>\n<p>Over half of all <abbr title=\"Ministry of Defence\">MOD<\/abbr>\u2019s defence equipment and support contracts are awarded this way, and in the past it has meant that some companies have been able to charge higher prices for their services. <\/p>\n<p>The Defence Reform Act 2014 gave <abbr title=\"Ministry of Defence\">MOD<\/abbr> the power to establish the <abbr title=\"Single Source Regulations Office\">SSRO<\/abbr> to ensure best value for money for the taxpayer as well as a fair price for companies. <\/p>\n<p>As chair of the <abbr title=\"Single Source Regulations Office\">SSRO<\/abbr>, Jeremy Newman will be central to reforming this process and ensuring that board decisions comply fully with legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Announcing the appointment, Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology Philip Dunne said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"Single Source Regulations Office\">SSRO<\/abbr> will deliver a more effective and efficient way of procuring the essential equipment our armed forces need to keep the United Kingdom secure, and at the right price.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Jeremy Newman has been appointed from within a very high-calibre field and I am confident that he has the skills, experience and character to make the <abbr title=\"Single Source Regulations Office\">SSRO<\/abbr> a success; both the department and industry partners are looking forward to working with him in the future.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Currently Chair of the Audit Commission, Jeremy Newman is well-placed to set up the <abbr title=\"Single Source Regulations Office\">SSRO<\/abbr>.
