{"id":45838,"date":"2014-07-31T10:31:50","date_gmt":"2014-07-31T10:31:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=42578422caa602a79034c7856034c087"},"modified":"2014-07-31T10:31:50","modified_gmt":"2014-07-31T10:31:50","slug":"news-story-do-your-homework-before-hitting-the-road-in-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=45838","title":{"rendered":"News story: Do your homework before hitting the road in Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Although driving regulations vary from country to country, new research issued by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and Carrentals.co.uk reveals that nearly half of British nationals who have driven abroad didn\u2019t research local road laws before travelling.<\/p>\n<p>The survey also shows that more experienced British drivers are just as guilty of not doing their homework, with 64% saying they didn\u2019t feel it was necessary to prepare for their next trip.<br \/>\nOver a quarter said they were unsure of drink driving regulations in the country they were travelling to, with 20% admitting to not knowing what equipment they should carry in their car. <\/p>\n<p>Nearly a quarter of British nationals surveyed found driving abroad stressful, while only half carried out research online before driving in Europe.  <\/p>\n<p>A significant 40% reveal they are unsure what to do if they are involved in a road traffic accident.<\/p>\n<p>The findings come as the FCO and Carrentals.co.uk encourages British travellers to be better prepared for driving in mainland Europe this summer. The FCO have released a video to raise awareness of the main differences in driving regulations and conditions. <\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xnxMi-zQIwc\">Driving Safely in Europe<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The survey was commissioned to help the FCO learn more about how British travellers prepare for their European road trips.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing more about the type of preparation British nationals do and don\u2019t do before driving in Europe helps the FCO provide advice and information that will be of the most use to Britons in the run up to their trip.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p>The FCO urges travellers do their homework by watching our video and consulting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/driving-abroad\">FCO\u2019s information on driving abroad<\/a>. You can follow <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FCOtravel\">@fcotravel<\/a> on Twitter for the latest updates.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theaa.com\/motoring_advice\/overseas\/index.html\">AA<\/a> and the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rac.co.uk\/driving-abroad\/\">RAC<\/a> also have advice on driving in specific countries including information on compulsory equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Chapman, the FCO\u2019s Director of Consular Services for Germany, said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Every year British Consulates around Europe provide assistance to British nationals involved in road traffic accidents or incidents. Researching the local driving rules and conditions \u2013 can help you to have a trouble free trip.<\/p>\n<p>Take particular care with alcohol limits, which are often lower than in the UK, and carry the right documents including European breakdown cover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We hope you won\u2019t need it but the number for the emergency services is 112 in Europe \u2013 it is a good idea to store this number in your phone just in case.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Gareth Robinson, Managing Director of Carrentals.co.uk, said:  <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We would encourage everyone planning to drive abroad to research their destination as laws are not always the same as in the UK.
