It helps commissioners develop the practical skills and judgment to design different ways to provide services and manage new markets.<\/p>\n<p>In the last year there was a 50% increase in demand for places on the programme among commissioning professionals. We are doubling the size of the programme to meet an ambitious target of 1,500 participants by 2016. <\/p>\n<p>We also plan to develop the network of local commissioning academies. After a highly successful pilot programme in Norfolk, participants were so impressed that they worked with us to set up their own academy.  <\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p>The Commissioning Academy is open for applications for future cohorts \u2013 by 9 September for the October programme. <a href=\"mailto:info@ccs.gsi.gov.uk\">Contact us<\/a> if you think that your organisation would benefit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Local Government Information Unit carried out <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lgiu.org.uk\/commissioning-academy-evaluation\/\">independent research on the impact of the Academy<\/a>. It found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>71.9% of survey respondents felt their involvement in the programme was already having a tangible impact and they were confident it would lead to a positive outcome for citizens<\/li>\n<li>Academy graduates feel more confident and inspired to try new approaches and think about how they commission differently<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So far, more than 250 commissioners from a wide range of central and local government sectors have been through the Academy programme. Another 250 are expected to have participated by the end of 2014. <\/p>\n<p>Francis Maude, Minister for the Cabinet Office said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Our pioneering commissioning academy is helping build commercial skills across the public sector \u2013 that\u2019s part of this government\u2019s long-term plan for a stronger economy. This academy has become a \u2018must attend\u2019 programme with participants telling us how it has helped transformed their thinking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Strengthening commissioning skills will help save taxpayers\u2019 money, improve public services and ensure the most innovative and impressive suppliers \u2013 whether they are <abbr title=\"small and medium enterprises\">SMEs<\/abbr>, voluntary organisations or larger, established companies \u2013 are able to win business from us.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Tim Eyres, a Commissioning Academy participant from Norfolk County Council, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Following attendance on the Academy, we co-located our commissioning and commercial teams to form a \u2018commissioning hub\u2019. Adults and Children\u2019s Services co-commissioned our family intervention project from the hub. Bringing the 2 elements together made it a simpler, more streamlined process for procurement elements and from the providers\u2019 perspective, allowing them to integrate their delivery more fully.
