{"id":46374,"date":"2014-08-14T09:00:03","date_gmt":"2014-08-14T09:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=1072d314fec31b1831c5af0749475210"},"modified":"2014-08-14T09:00:03","modified_gmt":"2014-08-14T09:00:03","slug":"news-story-lorry-levy-hauls-in-more-than-17-million-from-foreign-truckers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=46374","title":{"rendered":"News story: Lorry levy hauls in more than \u00a317 million from foreign truckers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Foreign truck drivers have handed over more than \u00a317 million to the taxpayer in the past 4 months thanks to a new charge.<\/p>\n<p>More than 618,000 levies have been purchased for over 112,000 vehicles from 76 different countries since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/hgv-road-user-levy\"><abbr title=\"heavy goods vehicle\">HGV<\/abbr> road user levy<\/a> was introduced in April 2014 \u2013 which has seen drivers coughing up enough cash to patch more than 320,000 potholes on our roads.<\/p>\n<p>The money raised through the levy is the equivalent of funding for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3,400 extra electric car grants or<\/li>\n<li>maintenance and power for 170,000 street lights for a year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Recent evidence shows over 95% of heavy goods vehicle operators are paying the new levy in Great Britain. Roadside checks have seen <abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> enforcement officers issue over 850 fixed penalty notices to drivers who have not paid \u2013 resulting in fines worth more than \u00a3250,000.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Minister Robert Goodwill said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I welcome these figures which show that the levy brought in by this government is really working. We anticipated the levy would generate around \u00a320 million a year \u2013 to take \u00a317 million in just 4 months is impressive and shows that compliance has remained high since introduction.<\/p>\n<p>Before the levy was introduced we had a ridiculous situation where foreign <abbr title=\"heavy goods vehicle\">HGV<\/abbr> drivers could fill up their tanks on the continent, pick up business in the UK and return to the mainland without even buying fuel here \u2013 without giving a penny to help maintain our roads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Meanwhile British hauliers were effectively operating at a disadvantage. I\u2019m glad to see this levy has addressed that imbalance.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>James Hookham, from the Freight Transport Association, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">UK road freight operators have consistently argued that foreign-registered HGVs operating in the UK should contribute to their use of our roads. The <abbr title=\"heavy goods vehicle\">HGV<\/abbr> levy ensures this, and in so doing helps those domestic UK hauliers who are in direct competition with foreign carriers for loads.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>All hauliers driving trucks of 12 tonnes or more must pay the levy before using UK roads, but UK hauliers do so when buying their vehicle excise duty to keep administration costs to a minimum. Discounts are available for longer periods, with charges varying between \u00a31.70 and \u00a310 per day or \u00a385 to \u00a31,000 per year.<\/p>\n<p>The levy is part of the coalition\u2019s promise of a fairer deal for UK hauliers, which includes cutting the duty paid on standard diesel to less than it was in October 2010 and freezing <abbr title=\"heavy goods vehicle\">HGV<\/abbr> vehicle excise duty during this Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>We are also introducing 1,800 longer semi-trailers that will yield \u00a33 million per year of benefits to business and investing \u00a33.3 billion in major road schemes to add over 500 miles of additional lane capacity to the strategic road network.
