{"id":46510,"date":"2014-08-18T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-08-18T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=c081cc59f8552a12468e5c9cb35ed2c5"},"modified":"2014-08-18T10:00:00","modified_gmt":"2014-08-18T10:00:00","slug":"news-story-vat-refund-scheme-for-museums-and-galleries-to-be-extended","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=46510","title":{"rendered":"News story: VAT refund scheme for museums and galleries to be extended"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The government has today (Monday 18 August) announced plans to extend the VAT refund scheme which helps museums and galleries with the costs of providing free access to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Free museums are a cornerstone of the government\u2019s cultural policy.  Admitting the public free of charge normally means a museum cannot recover VAT on its purchases. <\/p>\n<p>The VAT refund scheme for named museums and galleries supports institutions which allow free public access to their collections, by letting them reclaim VAT on costs associated with those collections.<\/p>\n<p>Under the extension, the V&amp;A Museum of Design, Dundee and Embrace Arts \u2013 the University of Leicester\u2019s art centre \u2013 will now be added to the order which lists institutions that can access the scheme. <\/p>\n<p>The order will also be updated so that the National Coal Mining Museum for England, which was previously included as part of the Science Museum, is now listed as a separate institution.<\/p>\n<p>Around \u00a360 million of support is provided through the VAT refund scheme each year to around 60 major UK institutions which are responsible for approximately 120 qualifying museums and galleries. <\/p>\n<p>Discussing the decision to extend the scheme, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This is great news for the V&amp;A Museum of Design, Dundee which will be the first ever design museum to be built in the UK outside London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Through this scheme, the UK government will be able to support the museum in showcasing Scotland\u2019s design heritage to the world, as well as hosting touring exhibitions from the V&amp;A.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Financial Secretary to the Treasury, David Gauke, added:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The UK\u2019s museums and galleries are a source of great education and interest, attracting visitors from all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>The government is committed to supporting them and ensuring they can be accessed by as many people as possible, through the VAT refund scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Extending the scheme will support more museums and galleries to open their doors, free of charge, for the public to enjoy them.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Image by <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/reinholdbehringer\/6093595130\">Reinhold Behringer on Flickr<\/a>.
