Roles range from departmental chief digital officers and chief technology officers, to technical architects and developers who are improving government services like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/transformation\/apply-carers-allowance\">Carer\u2019s Allowance<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/transformation\/apprenticeships\">apprenticeship applications<\/a>. <\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p>See how the government is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/transformation\">building better digital services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Government Digital Service (GDS) is leading this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/service-manual\/the-team\/recruitment\/hub.html\">ongoing recruitment<\/a> to increase specialist capability in the civil service. Raising technology and digital skill levels across government is 1 of 4 priority areas in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/civil-service-capabilities-plan\">Civil Service Capabilities Plan<\/a>, which was updated in April this year and forms part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/civil-service-reform-plan\">Civil Service Reform Plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One notable new appointment is former Credit Suisse Chief Information Officer (<abbr title=\"Chief Information Officer\">CIO<\/abbr>) Magnus Falk as the government\u2019s new Deputy Chief Technology Officer (<abbr title=\"Chief Technology Officer\">CTO<\/abbr>), reporting to Government <abbr title=\"Chief Technology Officer\">CTO<\/abbr> Liam Maxwell. Magnus joins a leadership team tasked with ensuring that government technology provides excellent digital services that people prefer to use.<\/p>\n<p>Other recent technology recruits include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ministry of Justice <abbr title=\"Chief Technology Officer\">CTO<\/abbr> Ian Sayer, who was Global <abbr title=\"Chief Information Officer\">CIO<\/abbr> at Electrolux<\/li>\n<li>government Chief Technical Architect (<abbr title=\"Chief Technical Architect\">CTA<\/abbr>) Kevin Humphries, former <abbr title=\"Chief Technical Architect\">CTA<\/abbr> at Qatarlyst<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Digital leadership has also been strengthened through the appointment of Chief Digital Officers (CDOs): <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HM Revenue &amp; Customs Chief Digital and Information Officer Mark Dearnley, formerly <abbr title=\"Chief Information Officer\">CIO<\/abbr> of Vodafone<\/li>\n<li>Ministry of Justice <abbr title=\"Chief Digital Officer\">CDO<\/abbr> Paul Shetler, who previously co-founded 2 start-ups and was <abbr title=\"Chief Technology Officer\">CTO<\/abbr> for Banking at Oracle<\/li>\n<li>Office for National Statistics Deputy Director for Digital Publishing Laura Dewis, who was Head of Online Commissioning at The Open University<\/li>\n<li>Jacqueline Steed, former Managing Director and <abbr title=\"Chief Information Officer\">CIO<\/abbr> for BT Wholesale, who starts as <abbr title=\"Chief Digital Officer\">CDO<\/abbr> at the Student Loan Company (SLC) next week<\/li>\n<li>Department for Work and Pensions <abbr title=\"Chief Digital Officer\">CDO<\/abbr> Kevin Cunnington, who was previously Global Head of Online for Vodafone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Departmental digital and technology leaders will work closely together, sharing experiences and lessons learned through the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/gds.blog.gov.uk\/digital-leaders-network\/\">Digital Leaders Network<\/a> and the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/gds.blog.gov.uk\/technology-leaders-network\/\">Technology Leaders Network<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Minister for the Cabinet Office Francis Maude said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">As part of our long-term economic plan, bringing in digital and technology experience and expertise is just one of the ways in which we are creating a world-class, 21st century civil service capable of leading change and delivering the best for Britain.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Mike Bracken, Executive Director of Digital in the Cabinet Office, said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The transformation of government digital services, and the technology that underpins it, is a compelling proposition.
