{"id":47387,"date":"2014-09-09T09:01:44","date_gmt":"2014-09-09T09:01:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=bf1a270e506e09512bd505a0642642de"},"modified":"2014-09-09T09:01:44","modified_gmt":"2014-09-09T09:01:44","slug":"news-story-first-of-its-kind-sickle-cell-educational-resource-for-science-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=47387","title":{"rendered":"News story: First-of-its-kind sickle cell educational resource for science teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>In a first for the NHS, the NHS Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening Programme has produced a set of resources for <abbr title=\"General certificate of secondary education\">GCSE<\/abbr> science teachers to use when <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.engagingscience.eu\/en\/2014\/07\/03\/take-the-test\/\">teaching genetic inheritance<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The free resource supports the teaching of <abbr title=\"General certificate of secondary education\">GCSE<\/abbr> science and uses sickle cell and thalassaemia as models to demonstrate how serious conditions can be inherited. <\/p>\n<p>Cathy Coppinger, NHS Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening Programme manager, said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Genetic inheritance is part of the <abbr title=\"General certificate of secondary education\">GCSE<\/abbr> science curriculum and we know sickle cell disease is often used as an example of how it works. We wanted to help teachers by providing them with resources that bring these issues to life.<\/p>\n<p>It is likely that students will go on to have to make decisions about sickle cell and thalassaemia tests and screening, so resources like this are important for building \u2018genetic literacy\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">There is still a lack of public understanding around sickle cell and thalassaemia and there remains stigma which can be a barrier to accessing both health services and screening.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Mr Matt Evans, Head of Science at de Stafford School, Caterham, said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The pack is free to download and it goes beyond the basic curriculum to encourage pupils to think about wider issues for the individual and for society. I\u2019ll certainly be using them in my science lessons from now on.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sickle cell disease is the most common serious genetic condition in England, affecting an estimated 13,500 people.
