Once completed the M1 will be four lanes from junction 25 to junction 35a, except across Tinsley Viaduct which increases from two lanes to three.

Six public exhibitions are being held:

The Derbyshire Hotel, Carter Lane East, South Normanton, Derbyshire, DE55 2EH
Friday 19 September between 2pm and 7pm
Saturday 20 September between 11am and 4pm

St. James the Greater Church Institute, Church Street, Barlborough, Chesterfield S43 4ER
Saturday 27 September between 11am and 4pm

‘The Source’ at Meadowhall, 300 Meadowhall Way, Sheffield, S9 1EA
Friday 10 October between 2pm and 7pm
Saturday 11 October between 11am and 4pm

Brinsworth Community Hall, Brinsworth Lane, Rotherham S60 5BU
Saturday 18 October between 11am and 4pm

Highways Agency Project Manager Andy Kirk said:

These stretches of the M1 are vital strategic links connecting businesses, communities and international traffic. At its peak, both stretches can collectively carry over 200,000 vehicles per day, which has meant that congestion and delay is a serious problem in these areas.

With such a significant route being important for so many people, it is essential that we consult the public and make sure they are engaged every step of the way in our plans for improvements. We would like to send an open invitation to anyone who would like to attend, to see when there is a public exhibition in their area, come along and find out more about the improvement schemes.

Advance work to replace the existing steel central reservation barrier to a safer concrete barrier has already begun between junctions 28 and 31 near Mansfield, Chesterfield and Worksop, in preparation for the proposed ‘smart motorway’ which will allow the hard shoulder to be fully converted to a permanent running lane creating additional capacity and helping to relieve congestion. The barrier replacement work between junctions 32 and 35a was completed in Autumn 2013, in readiness for the Smart motorway works which is due to start on this stretch of the M1 in early 2015.

To stay up to date with the latest developments, visit the Highways Agency’s website at where you can register to be kept informed about the news on the scheme. M1 Junction 28 to 31
and M1 Junction 32 to 35a.

General enquiries

Members of the public should contact the Highways Agency Information Line on 0300 123 5000.

Media enquiries

Journalists should contact the Highways Agency press office on 0844 693 1448 and use the menu to speak to the most appropriate press officer.

Road users, hauliers and members of the public are being urged to find out more about work to transform the M1 in Yorkshire and the East Midlands.

[13
