{"id":47593,"date":"2014-09-14T23:31:00","date_gmt":"2014-09-14T23:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=852cf4a3111169fba08122e3f486643c"},"modified":"2014-09-14T23:31:00","modified_gmt":"2014-09-14T23:31:00","slug":"news-story-health-and-travel-advice-for-hajj-pilgrims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=47593","title":{"rendered":"News story: Health and travel advice for Hajj pilgrims"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>With thousands  of British Muslims expected to attend this year\u2019s Hajj pilgrimage, predicted to fall between 2 &#8211; 7 October, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is urging those travelling to Saudi Arabia to be fully prepared and follow up-to-date travel advice before embarking on their trip.<\/p>\n<p>The Hajjis or pilgrims are advised to take out fully comprehensive Shariah compliant travel insurance and travel with a reputable tour operator. Cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus in people who have visited Saudi Arabia continue to be reported so getting the right vaccinations is critical as is travelling with the relevant vaccination card. <\/p>\n<p>The Foreign Office, West Midlands Police and the Council of British Hajis are working together to support British Nationals undertaking the Hajj.<\/p>\n<p>Sher Houston from the Know Before You Go team at the FCO said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The annual Hajj pilgrimage is one of the largest gatherings of Muslims in the world. Despite the vast numbers, there is relatively little disruption and most pilgrims travel trouble free. However, as with all overseas trips, we strongly recommend that the necessary precautions are taken and the trip is carefully planned. We advise all British pilgrims to check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office\u2019s travel advice and the requirements set out by the Saudi Government.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Detective Sergeant Nadeem Hameed of the West Midlands Police said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We are pleased to support and promote this campaign and recognise the importance of this religious pilgrimage and seek to promote safety awareness and safer travel among all pilgrims.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Rashid Mogradia, CEO of the Council of British Hajjis said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">It is imperative that pilgrims seek good travel tips before they embark on a Journey of a Lifetime.   As a council, we are actively supporting and promoting the FCO\u2019s Know Before You Go Campaign and urge travellers to consult its travel advice pages before travel.  We wish the pilgrims a \u201cHajj Al-Mabroor &#8211; An Accepted Hajj\u201d and would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to the FCO\u2019s Hajj support team who will be present in Jeddah and Makkah should anyone require consular support while in Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The FCO will provide the full range of consular services and will be sending the British Hajj Team \u2013 a team made of regional FCO consular staff \u2013 to Saudi Arabia during the Hajj.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"travellers-checklist\">Travellers\u2019 checklist<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to the requirements from the Saudi government, the FCO recommends that all pilgrims use the following travellers\u2019 checklist: <\/p>\n<h3 id=\"check-the-fco-travel-advice\">Check the FCO travel advice<\/h3>\n<p>Make sure that you are up to date with the current situation in Saudi Arabia at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/knowbeforeyougo\">www.gov.uk\/knowbeforeyougo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"travel-with-a-reputable-tour-operator\">Travel with a reputable tour operator<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>make sure that you book your tickets through an ATOL registered tour operator to avoid unnecessary difficulties &#8211; for more information please visit <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.atol.org.uk\">www.atol.org.uk<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>have contact details for your tour operator in the UK and their representatives in Makkah<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"get-comprehensive-travel-insurance\">Get comprehensive travel insurance<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>ensure it covers all aspects of your journey<\/li>\n<li>check health requirements<\/li>\n<li>which vaccines do I need?<\/li>\n<li>when do I need to get them?<\/li>\n<li>is there anything else I need to be aware of?<\/li>\n<li>if you require medication check that you have adequate quantities <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"check-passport-and-visa-are-valid\">Check passport and visa are valid<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>do I need a visa, or to renew an existing one? <\/li>\n<li>copy passport and travel documents<\/li>\n<li>take a copy with you and store online using a secure storage site <\/li>\n<li>leave copies with family and friends, along with your itinerary and contact details <\/li>\n<li>research local laws and customs <\/li>\n<li>country specific laws and customs can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/foreign-travel-advice\">www.gov.uk\/foreign-travel-advice<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"pack-suitable-footwear\">Pack suitable footwear<\/h3>\n<p>You may have to walk long distances and make sure you have all the necessary clothing and items as advised by your Hajj tour operator.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"make-a-note-of-hajj-delegations-contact-details\">Make a note of Hajj Delegations contact details<\/h3>\n<p>The Hajj Delegation and local consulate will be based at the Makkah Hilton between 4 \u2013 18 Dhul-Hijjah:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tel: 00966 125 34 0000 (Hilton switchboard and ask for British Hajj Team)<\/li>\n<li>Mob: 00966 501 00 4268 (Available 24hrs a day)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"twitter-q-a-session\">Twitter Q &amp;A session<\/h3>\n<p>On Monday 22 September the British Embassy, Riyadh will be hosting a live Hajj Q&amp;A session between 11am and 12pm BST.
