He was appointed Chief Executive at Siemens plc on 1 July 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Business Secretary Vince Cable said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">I have been an admirer of Juergen Maier\u2019s work as a leading supporter of manufacturing and apprenticeships. So I am delighted that he is joining <abbr title=\"Department for Business, Innovation and Skills\">BIS<\/abbr> as a Non-Executive member of our Departmental Board. Juergen\u2019s significant experience in manufacturing and business will be invaluable to <abbr title=\"Department for Business, Innovation and Skills\">BIS<\/abbr> as we focus on supporting local growth, particularly in our innovative high-tech industries.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Juergen Maier said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">I am delighted to support <abbr title=\"Department for Business, Innovation and Skills\">BIS<\/abbr> by joining the Board. Involving employers is crucial to ensuring we continue to develop our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/policies\/using-industrial-strategy-to-help-the-uk-economy-and-business-compete-and-grow\">Industrial Strategy<\/a> to support competitive growth in a better balanced UK economy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Non-executive board members are experts from outside government who assist in the delivery of policy using relevant experience from business.<\/p>\n<p>Juergen Maier joins Allan Cook, Stephen Bligh, Ann Dowling, Dale Murray, Dalton Philips and Wendy Purcell on the <abbr title=\"Department for Business, Innovation and Skills\">BIS<\/abbr> board.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"notes-to-editors\">Notes to editors<\/h3>\n<h4 id=\"juergen-maier--biography\">Juergen Maier \u2013 Biography:<\/h4>\n<p>Juergen Maier was appointed Chief Executive of Siemens plc on 1 July 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Juergen has been a member of the Siemens UK Executive Management Board since October 2008, and has held a number of senior roles within Siemens in the UK and Germany including Industry Sector lead for the UK and Ireland, 2 Divisional Managing Director roles and Manufacturing Director of the award-winning Drives Factory in Congleton, Cheshire.<\/p>\n<p>Juergen joined Siemens in 1986 after obtaining a BSc in production engineering from Nottingham Trent University, on a Siemens-sponsored graduate programme.<\/p>\n<p>He was also made an honorary professor of Engineering at the University of Manchester in March 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Juergen is passionate about the UK rebalancing its economy and supports a number of UK-wide initiatives in support of Manufacturing and engineering skills including board membership of the Sector Skills council SEMTA and of the EEF (UK manufacturers\u2019 organisation) and championing various government initiatives such as UK\u2019s High Value Manufacturing Catapults. He also holds a Non-Executive Director role for a <abbr title=\"small and medium sized enterprise\">SME<\/abbr> manufacturing company called International Innovative Technologies based in Gateshead and is Chairman of the North West Business Leadership team and a board member of Greater Manchester <abbr title=\"Local Enterprise Partnership\">LEP<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>Born 1964 in Germany with Austrian nationality, he came to the UK in 1974. <\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.siemens.co.uk\">Siemens in the UK <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Siemens was established in the United Kingdom 170 years ago and now employs 13,760 people in the UK.
