{"id":47977,"date":"2014-09-25T13:27:00","date_gmt":"2014-09-25T13:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=bb9ecaeeb646157ebd8abf45454442cd"},"modified":"2014-09-25T13:27:00","modified_gmt":"2014-09-25T13:27:00","slug":"press-release-bursaries-and-scholarships-for-top-graduates-who-train-to-teach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=47977","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Bursaries and scholarships for top graduates who train to teach"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Bursaries and prestigious scholarships worth \u00a325,000 tax free will be offered to top graduates who choose to get into teaching and to help raise standards across England\u2019s schools, Schools Minister David Laws has announced today (Thursday 25 September).<\/p>\n<p>Raising teaching standards and delivering the best schools and skills to prepare young people for life in modern Britain is key to building a stronger economy and a fairer society.<\/p>\n<p>To help recruit the best and brightest graduates, with the potential to be brilliant teachers in key subjects, the coalition government has announced increases to financial incentives available to trainees starting in the academic year 2015 to 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Changes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a \u00a325,000 tax-free bursary (up from \u00a320,000 in 2014 to 2015) for top trainees with a 2:1 or a 1st in physics, or a 1st in maths, chemistry, computing or languages<\/li>\n<li>a \u00a320,000 tax-free bursary (up from \u00a315,000 in 2014 to 2015) for graduates with a 2:1 in chemistry or languages, and \u00a315,000 for graduates who get a 2:2 (up from \u00a312,000 last year)<\/li>\n<li>increased funding for schools offering salaried School Direct places for trainees in maths, physics and computing to boost the starting pay in these subjects &#8211; trainees could earn more than \u00a321,000 nationally and \u00a325,000 in inner London<\/li>\n<li>increased bursaries for trainees in design and technology and geography (\u00a312,000 for a 1st, \u00a39,000 for a 2:1 and \u00a34,000 for a 2:2), biology (\u00a315,000 for a 1st, \u00a312,000 for a 2:1 and \u00a310,000 for a 2:2) and those with a 2:2 in music will now get \u00a34,000 <\/li>\n<li>a new bursary for trainees in religious education &#8211; \u00a39,000 for a 1st and \u00a34,000 for a 2:1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As well as a range of lucrative bursaries the government is continuing to offer sought-after teacher training scholarships for the most gifted maths, physics, chemistry and computing trainees, in partnership with highly respected professional bodies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the Institute of Physics (<abbr title=\"Institute of Physics\">IOP<\/abbr>)<\/li>\n<li>the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (<abbr title=\"Institute of Mathematics and its Applications\">IMA<\/abbr>)<\/li>\n<li>the Royal Society of Chemistry (<abbr title=\"Royal Society of Chemistry\">RSC<\/abbr>)<\/li>\n<li>\n<abbr title=\"Chartered Institute for IT\">BCS<\/abbr>, the Chartered Institute for IT<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Around 1,000 top graduates have already benefited from the scholarship schemes, which have been running since 2011. As well as financial benefits, scholars enjoy a range of perks including free membership to professional bodies, access to resources and events to support them in their teacher training, and early career support through their first years of teaching. <\/p>\n<p>A further 700 scholarships are up for grabs for the 2015 to 2016 academic year worth up to \u00a325,000. <\/p>\n<p>Schools Minister David Laws said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Teaching is not only a hugely rewarding career but it also offers fantastic opportunity for progression.<\/p>\n<p>We want to attract the best and brightest graduates into the profession, to inspire even more young people to achieve their full potential.<\/p>\n<p>Increases to the range of bursaries and prestigious scholarship on offer for core subjects like maths, chemistry and physics will help us recruit the nation\u2019s most talented graduates and raise the standard of teaching in our schools so that every child receives the education they deserve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">These changes will help build a stronger economy and a fairer society.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Charlie Taylor, Chief Executive of the National College for Teaching and Leadership (<abbr title=\"National College for Teaching and Leadership\">NCTL<\/abbr>), said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Teaching is a brilliant job that now attracts more top graduates than ever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">I am delighted we are offering these excellent bursaries and scholarships, giving more great people the opportunity to become teachers.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Around 35,000 trainee teachers need to be recruited every year. To help with this, <abbr title=\"National College for Teaching and Leadership\">NCTL<\/abbr> runs an annual recruitment drive which plays a key role in attracting high-quality new entrants to the profession.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s campaign, Your Future Their Future, launched on 15 September with an <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.education.gov.uk\/get-into-teaching\">interactive online film<\/a> featuring television\u2019s Mr Burton (Educating Yorkshire) available to view on YouTube, 4OD and Sky Go. The new campaign also includes regional recruitment events throughout the academic year. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"physics\">Physics<\/h2>\n<p>The <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iop.org\/education\/teach\/itts\/page_52632.html\">physics <abbr title=\"initial teacher training\">ITT<\/abbr> (initial teacher training) scholarship scheme is run by <abbr title=\"Institute of Physics\">IOP<\/abbr><\/a>. <abbr title=\"Institute of Physics\">IOP<\/abbr> offers the following additional benefits to successful scholars:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<abbr title=\"Institute of Physics\">IOP<\/abbr> membership<\/li>\n<li>mentoring through their Stimulating Physics Support (SPS) programme<\/li>\n<li>networking and support from scholarship peers<\/li>\n<li>the chance to contribute to physics education policy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dr Frances Saunders, President of <abbr title=\"Institute of Physics\">IOP<\/abbr>, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Physics teachers play a vital role in ensuring that school students have the knowledge and skills necessary to take on the challenges of the 21st century. We are delighted to be working with the Department for Education and the other mathematical professional organisations to deliver this scheme for a third year.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"chemistry\">Chemistry<\/h2>\n<p>The <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rsc.org\/Education\/scholarships\/\">chemistry <abbr title=\"initial teacher training\">ITT<\/abbr> scholarship is run by <abbr title=\"Royal Society of Chemistry\">RSC<\/abbr><\/a>. <abbr title=\"Royal Society of Chemistry\">RSC<\/abbr> offers the following additional benefits to successful scholars:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>membership for 2 years, and discounted for a further 2 years<\/li>\n<li>selection of <abbr title=\"Royal Society of Chemistry\">RSC<\/abbr> materials including resources, lab coat and other consumables<\/li>\n<li>national and regional support networks including:\n<ul>\n<li>local meetings<\/li>\n<li>online communities <\/li>\n<li>annual conference\/events<\/li>\n<li>mentoring <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Chief Executive of <abbr title=\"Royal Society of Chemistry\">RSC<\/abbr> Dr Robert Parker, said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We are fully committed to ensuring every child has an excellent chemistry education.
