{"id":48052,"date":"2014-09-26T14:07:00","date_gmt":"2014-09-26T14:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=bcceee503c2f312a7b37bb37d0e57dc9"},"modified":"2014-09-26T14:07:00","modified_gmt":"2014-09-26T14:07:00","slug":"news-story-army-officer-recognised-as-engineering-visionary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=48052","title":{"rendered":"News story: Army officer recognised as engineering visionary"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Major Morgan, from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (<abbr title=\"Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers\">REME<\/abbr>), was chosen for his work leading the Army\u2019s involvement in the Bloodhound supersonic car (<abbr title=\"supersonic car\">SSC<\/abbr>) project. <\/p>\n<p>The recognition is part of <abbr title=\"Institution of Mechanical Engineers\">IMechE<\/abbr>\u2019s Vision Awards, which celebrate those who, in their work, training or learning, have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to engineering and its future. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking about the award Oli said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m immensely humbled to be recognised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers for my work with <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundssc.com\/\">Bloodhound <abbr title=\"supersonic car\">SSC<\/abbr><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The project\u2019s goal is to inspire a generation into careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (<abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and maths\">STEM<\/abbr>) by building a car capable of 1,000 miles per hour (mph) and I am proud to be a part of it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As the Army\u2019s team leader on the project Oli\u2019s role is to lead the small team of <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.army.mod.uk\/reme\/reme.aspx\"><abbr title=\"Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers\">REME<\/abbr><\/a> expert technicians who are helping to build the supersonic car alongside managing over 150 Bloodhound educational ambassadors. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bloodhound supersonic car \" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/31083\/bloodhound1.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>A computer-generated image of the Bloodhound supersonic car [Picture: Siemens]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Bloodhound project aims to build a car to break the land speed record, using a jet engine and rocket technology to reach a speed of over 1,000mph. Oli said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Bloodhound gives kids a unique opportunity to engage with a once-in-a-generation engineering project; it\u2019s science fiction brought to life. We can place kids at the centre of the story by mixing educational workshops with distance learning on the internet.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><abbr title=\"Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers\">REME<\/abbr> has championed the Army\u2019s involvement in the land speed record project with technical teams using their engineering skills to help build the Bloodhound car in 6-month rotations. <\/p>\n<p>The project also recruited a large number of volunteer ambassadors who visit schools across the country to get kids interested in engineering:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">This year over 40,000 children have received a lesson on Bloodhound and army ambassadors have been a part of this success story. The goal by 2018 is that nearly every child in the country will have had a lesson on the car.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Major Oli Morgan\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/31084\/Major_Oli_Morgan2.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>Major Oli Morgan has been named as the 2014 Modern Day Visionary by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers [Picture: Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Speaking at the awards ceremony, Colin Brown, Director of Engineering at <abbr title=\"Institution of Mechanical Engineers\">IMechE<\/abbr>, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">I think our 2014 visionaries have a very modern outlook on the fast-moving, dynamic engineering profession. They are already seeking to inspire those that follow them. Without exception, they are a credit to the profession and it is an honour to recognise them.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Head of <abbr title=\"Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers\">REME<\/abbr> personnel, Colonel Dan Scott, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Major Morgan exemplifies the title of \u2018professional engineer\u2019.
