{"id":48751,"date":"2014-10-15T10:29:56","date_gmt":"2014-10-15T10:29:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=b04b589996711768440a49fe4f249257"},"modified":"2014-10-15T10:29:56","modified_gmt":"2014-10-15T10:29:56","slug":"press-release-inspiring-students-to-sign-up-to-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=48751","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Inspiring students to sign up to science"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>On Tuesday 14 October nearly 100 students from schools local to the Salisbury area learnt about careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (<abbr title=\"Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths\">STEM<\/abbr>) with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (<abbr title=\"Defence Science and Technology Laboratory\">Dstl<\/abbr>). <\/p>\n<p>The Year 9 students were able to get hands on with activities that demonstrated how <abbr title=\"Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths\">STEM<\/abbr> subjects support the military and protect the UK from terrorism. The activities which showcased some of the exciting careers available at <abbr title=\"Defence Science and Technology Laboratory\">Dstl<\/abbr> were designed to be fun and interactive by <abbr title=\"Defence Science and Technology Laboratory\">Dstl<\/abbr>\u2019s <abbr title=\"Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths\">STEM<\/abbr> Ambassadors \u2013 individuals who volunteer to work with young people and to act as role-models within <abbr title=\"Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths\">STEM<\/abbr> careers.<\/p>\n<p>The activities included testing \u2018armour\u2019 made from paper and plastic using chocolates and shuttlecocks and an engineering challenge to build a tower using unusual materials such as spaghetti and marshmallows. The students were also able to have a look at a Jackal armoured vehicle to find out more about the <abbr title=\"Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths\">STEM<\/abbr> involved in designing it, and learnt about how thermal imaging technology can be used to detect heat signatures by thermally camouflaging a plastic cup containing warm water. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Students take part in an engineering challenge\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/31729\/Students_take_part_in_an_engineering_challenge.JPG\"><\/div><figcaption>Students take part in an engineering challenge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The day was devised by <abbr title=\"Defence Science and Technology Laboratory\">Dstl<\/abbr>\u2019s <abbr title=\"Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths\">STEM<\/abbr> Outreach Manager Jaime Williamson and Early Careers Manager Kat Ward. Jaime explained. <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The aim was to inspire the students to continue their studies in <abbr title=\"Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths\">STEM<\/abbr> subjects and show that these subjects offer exciting and rewarding future career opportunities. We encouraged local schools to send those students that had the potential to pursue further study and careers in <abbr title=\"Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths\">STEM<\/abbr>, but who had not yet made up their minds.
