{"id":48850,"date":"2014-10-16T16:19:00","date_gmt":"2014-10-16T16:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=fa158bf823c33713425bbb34d619f48f"},"modified":"2014-10-16T16:19:00","modified_gmt":"2014-10-16T16:19:00","slug":"news-story-final-event-of-normandy-veterans-association","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=48850","title":{"rendered":"News story: Final event of Normandy Veterans\u2019 Association"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The Normandy Veterans\u2019 Association (<abbr title=\"Normandy Veterans\u2019 Association\">NVA<\/abbr>) is made up of those who took part in the 1944 invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe<\/p>\n<p>The group have decided to disband due to dwindling numbers and Lord Astor of Hever and Armed Forces Minister Mark Francois were among around 600 people who gathered for the service, which marked the last formal event of <abbr title=\"Normandy Veterans\u2019 Association\">NVA<\/abbr>. <\/p>\n<p>The service featured the laying up of its national standard at St Margaret\u2019s church, which is in the grounds of Westminster Abbey. <\/p>\n<p>Lord Astor said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This poignant service was a fitting finale in the long and important history of the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/1939-45.co.uk\/nva.html\">Normandy Veterans\u2019 Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">For decades the association has united those who took part in the 1944 invasion. While the association has decided to disband, the efforts and sacrifices of those who fought for the liberation of Europe will not be forgotten.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Jim Radford, George Batts and Ken Sturdy \" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/31827\/DDC-14-275-15g.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>Normandy Veterans Jim Radford, George Batts and Ken Sturdy outside Westminster Abbey [Picture: Sergeant Pete Mobbs RAF, Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Every summer the <abbr title=\"Normandy Veterans\u2019 Association\">NVA<\/abbr> has returned to the same French beaches to honour their fallen comrades. But <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/DefenceHQ\/the-70th-anniversary-of-d-day\">this year\u2019s commemorations of the D-Day landings<\/a> was the last to be officially marked by the association. The events marked 70 years since the Allied invasion of Normandy \u2013 the largest amphibious assault ever launched.   <\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Defence supported a range of major commemorative events, both on the French coast and in the UK, working with a number of stakeholders including the <abbr title=\"Normandy Veterans\u2019 Association\">NVA<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mark Francois talking to a Normandy Veteran\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/31828\/DDC-14-275-11g.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>Armed Forces Minister Mark Francois talking to a Normandy Veteran [Picture: Sergeant Pete Mobbs RAF, Crown copyright]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Around 43 Normandy veterans, and Brigadier David Baines and His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester, joined other invited guests for the church service today at noon.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Normandy Veterans\u2019 Association\">NVA<\/abbr> secretary George Batts, 89, said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The service was phenomenal but in a way heart-breaking because it was our very last event. It was a lovely service and they did us proud, but we are all old codgers now.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"Normandy Veterans\u2019 Association\">NVA<\/abbr> will formally disband on 21 November.
