{"id":48879,"date":"2014-10-17T09:56:45","date_gmt":"2014-10-17T09:56:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=1be74e5078182933347bce5219b98ad1"},"modified":"2014-10-17T09:56:45","modified_gmt":"2014-10-17T09:56:45","slug":"news-story-dalgety-bay-contamination-control-progress-continues-with-survey-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=48879","title":{"rendered":"News story: Dalgety Bay contamination control progress continues with survey work"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), the Ministry of Defence\u2019s (<abbr title=\"Ministry of Defence\">MOD<\/abbr>\u2019s) property and services provider, has commissioned experts to carry out ecology and bird surveys at the Fife beach.<\/p>\n<p>Survey work will be carried out monthly and completed by March 2015. The results will support the Environmental Impact Assessment required by Fife Council.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/dalgety-bay-management-strategy-report\">Dalgety Bay management strategy<\/a>\u2019 was published in July 2014. The report recommends a number of measures that will address and manage the contamination at Dalgety Bay.<\/p>\n<p>DIO Chief Operating Officer Colin Wood said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We are committed to supporting the Dalgety Bay community by following the clear plan as set out in the \u2018Dalgety Bay management strategy\u2019.This long term solution sees <abbr title=\"Ministry of Defence\">MOD<\/abbr> working in partnership with the Dalgety Bay Implementation Group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We recognise, there are statutory procedures which must be followed. These include producing an Environmental Impact Assessment, and the ongoing bird and ecology surveys will support this key requirement.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Dalgety Bay management strategy recommends actions including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>removal of radioactive (radium) material<\/li>\n<li>reinforcement, replacement and extension of coastal rock armour<\/li>\n<li>construction of a replacement slipway at Dalgety Bay Sailing Club <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"Ministry of Defence\">MOD<\/abbr> has agreed in principle to implement these measures, providing it can obtain firm agreement from Fife Council, through further detailed discussions, to meet the costs of maintaining the coastal defences into the longer term.
