Mr Hugh Evans has been appointed Her Majesty\u2019s Ambassador to the Lao People\u2019s Democratic Republic in succession to Mr Philip Malone LVO, who will be transferring to another Diplomatic Service appointment. Mr Evans will take up his appointment during March 2015.<\/p>\n

Mr Evans joined the FCO in 1985 and has covered a wide range of policy and management roles. He spent his early career as an FCO Research Analyst working on South and South East Asia and was seconded to the US State Department as a regional expert on Asian affairs. He has since served overseas in Nairobi, Khartoum, Moscow and, most recently, Erbil, in northern Iraq. <\/p>\n

On his appointment as Her Majesty\u2019s Ambassador to the Lao People\u2019s Republic, Mr Evans has said<\/p>\n

I am delighted to be appointed as British Ambassador to the Lao People\u2019s Democratic Republic. The reopening of our Vientiane Embassy in 2012 highlighted the UK\u2019s commitment to building strong ties with this important ASEAN member state and the wider South East Asian Region. It will be a great privilege for me to work to further broaden our bilateral political and economic relations. As Laos prepares to take on the role of chairing ASEAN in 2016, I also look forward to promoting cooperation on a range of international issues.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
