This trend reflects the government’s raising of the participation age to ensure young people stay in education or training beyond the age of 16.

It was also revealed that the number of 19- to 24-year-olds who are NEET and who have been unemployed for more than 6 months decreased by 68,000. Those unemployed for less than 6 months fell by 55,000 compared to figures from July to September 2013.

Notes to editors

The full Q3 statistics can be found at ‘NEET statistics quarterly brief: July to September 2014’.

DfE and BIS media enquiries

              DfE central newsdesk
020 7783 8300

              BIS media enquiries
020 7215 3234/3505

The number of young people not in education, employment or training (NEET) for 2014’s summer months returned to levels not seen since 2007.

[13
