{"id":50734,"date":"2014-11-26T10:39:03","date_gmt":"2014-11-26T10:39:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=603404391ffa761169dda65d7081dcb9"},"modified":"2014-11-26T10:39:03","modified_gmt":"2014-11-26T10:39:03","slug":"press-release-online-guide-to-help-communities-learn-about-their-shared-ww1-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=50734","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Online guide to help communities learn about their shared WW1 history"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The Department for Communities and Local Government (<abbr title=\"Department for Communities and Local Government\">DCLG<\/abbr>) and the Imperial War Museum have launched a new online guide to help local community groups, museums and libraries bring their community together and discover their shared history by organising World War 1 commemoration events. <\/p>\n<p>The guide &#8211; Suggestions for organising a \u2018Bring a First World War object\u2019 event &#8211; offers practical advice to organisations like community groups, museums, schools and councils on how to successfully organise a \u2018Bring an Object\u2019 event where members of the public can bring their own World War 1 mementoes and learn more about their treasured items as well as their own community\u2019s World War 1 history.<br \/>\nThe British Army during the First World War was made up of people from across the globe including 1.3 million people from pre-partition India. \u2018Bring an Object\u2019 events are a good way to bring diverse communities together to discover more about our shared First World War history.<\/p>\n<p>Communities Secretary Eric Pickles said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A hundred years ago men from across the globe fought side-by-side in defence of Britain, and the liberty of the world. Their sacrifice not only defeated tyranny and oppression, it also built the foundations for modern Britain, where people from all backgrounds can live together in peace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">These \u2018Bring an Object\u2019 events enable communities across the country to honour and take pride in the achievements of the past. But they also ensure we can celebrate what makes Britain a great place to live today, and remember that the mutual tolerance and respect we value was bought at a price.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The guide is split into easy-to-read sections which offer advice on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>when and where to hold a \u2018Bring your Own\u2019 event<\/li>\n<li>what to offer visitors to excite and engage them in the history of World War 1<\/li>\n<li>who to target and invite<\/li>\n<li>how to conserve  historical items<\/li>\n<li>advice on how to publicise the event to get as much of the community attending as possible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The guide is available to members of the Centenary Partnership Programme. <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/members.1914.org\/wp-login.php?action=register\">Sign up<\/a> at <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.1914.org\/\">1914.org<\/a> and <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/members.1914.org\/learning-guides\/\">download the guide<\/a> in the members\u2019 area. <\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Department for Communities and Local Government\">DCLG<\/abbr> and the Imperial War Museum have also launched an online resource to help people find out about some of the most commonly held family heirlooms from the First World War and guidance on how to research these objects further.
