{"id":51700,"date":"2014-12-16T16:57:50","date_gmt":"2014-12-16T16:57:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=7669268205a27c32f0e21830843185af"},"modified":"2014-12-16T16:57:50","modified_gmt":"2014-12-16T16:57:50","slug":"press-release-nick-clegg-holds-first-mental-health-taskforce-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=51700","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Nick Clegg holds first Mental Health Taskforce meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Welfare and employment, the criminal justice system and services for children and young people were the focus of the first meeting of the Deputy Prime Minister\u2019s Mental Health Taskforce this afternoon with ministers from across the coalition.<\/p>\n<p>Chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister, the meeting was attended by senior ministers including Jeremy Hunt, Iain Duncan Smith and Danny Alexander, to examine urgently how to improve mental health services.<\/p>\n<p>They discussed what more could be done in these 3 areas to make further improvements, and will meet again in the new year to discuss specific proposals. <\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Prime Minister has a long track record campaigning to bring treatment for mental health problems out of the shadows and in line with physical health.<\/p>\n<p>In government he has helped build a strong foundation for the improvement of mental health services, securing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/talking-therapies-a-4-year-plan-of-action\">\u00a3400 million investment expanding talking therapies<\/a><\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/deputy-pm-announces-150m-investment-to-transform-treatment-for-eating-disorders\">\u00a3150 million investment announced last month<\/a> for treatment and support for children and young adults with eating disorders<\/li>\n<li>\u00a3120 million investment in mental health to include the introduction in April 2015 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/first-ever-nhs-waiting-time-standards-for-mental-health-announced\">first ever waiting time standards for mental health in the NHS<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>\u00a354 million for the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cypiapt.org\/\">Children and Young People\u2019s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies programme<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>\u00a37 million investment to fund 50 new inpatient beds for children and young people<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Millions of people suffer every day with mental health problems but many are simply not getting the treatment and support they need to get on in life.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been pushing hard in government to transform mental health services, securing millions of pounds of investment to help create a fairer society where people get the help they need, when they need it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">But we need to go further and faster and that\u2019s why I\u2019ve set up this dedicated taskforce. This is a major leap forward for mental health where ministers from across  government are working together to give people the help and support they need wherever they might need it &#8211; at school, at work, or in the NHS.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The meeting comes just days after the Deputy Prime Minister announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/12-million-to-help-people-with-mental-health-problems-get-back-into-work\">\u00a312 million investment to trial new ways of working to help people with mental health problems stay in work<\/a> and get back into work after a period of absence.<\/p>\n<p>It followed a major new report from mental health charity Mind which called for more intensive support in this area with nearly half (46%) of people claiming Employment and Support Allowance suffering with mental health conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The estimated cost of mental ill-health to the economy is \u00a370 billion a year, equivalent to 4.5% of GDP, through lost productivity, social benefits and health care.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"new-pilots\">New pilots<\/h2>\n<p>The pilots will involve:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>key workers and individual support packages to help claimants create bespoke action plans and coordinate existing local support services<\/li>\n<li>support for new employees to make sure they can stay in work and cope with anxiety and other ongoing problems<\/li>\n<li>training for employment advisers to identify mental health problems and for GPs to recognise the importance of work in improving mental health<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 4 pilot areas, secured as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/growth-deals-firing-up-local-economies\">Growth Deals agreements<\/a>, will measure the impact of integrated services for between 2,000 and 3,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a312 million investment includes \u00a36 million from the Department for Communities &amp; Local Government and \u00a36 million match-funding from pilot areas.
