{"id":52182,"date":"2015-01-06T12:22:00","date_gmt":"2015-01-06T12:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=bc3cd2f7ae7daca80faeb3ba790bea4f"},"modified":"2015-01-06T12:22:00","modified_gmt":"2015-01-06T12:22:00","slug":"news-story-transport-secretary-presses-ahead-with-rail-improvements-in-the-north","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=52182","title":{"rendered":"News story: Transport Secretary presses ahead with rail improvements in the north"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin and transport minister Robert Goodwill visited the north of England on 5 January 2015 to look at how rail improvements could transform the region into a \u2018northern powerhouse\u2019 of connected cities.<\/p>\n<p>During visits to Liverpool and Leeds, they met leaders from across the region to discuss their vision for future improvements.<\/p>\n<p>The visit came after the government gave its backing to northern leaders to create Transport for the North (<abbr title=\"Transport for the North\">TfN<\/abbr>), a new body made up of the main northern city regions. <abbr title=\"Transport for the North\">TfN<\/abbr> will work with government to develop transport plans \u2013 including proposals for an improved east-west rail link connecting the north\u2019s major cities \u2013 that will strengthen the region\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick McLoughlin said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Strong rail links are vital to building economic prosperity across the north. We have big ambitions for more trains, more seats and faster services, and local leaders in the north are best placed to tell us how we can make this a reality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Today\u2019s (5 January 2015) discussions were very constructive, and I look forward to working closely with these organisations as they develop their plans.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In October, Sir David Higgins published a report recommending the creation of Transport for the North, so that northern cities could speak with \u2018one voice\u2019 on transport issues.
