{"id":53488,"date":"2015-02-05T14:49:00","date_gmt":"2015-02-05T14:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=4cebe8b40609e7b9358c3fc9688f2304"},"modified":"2015-02-05T14:49:00","modified_gmt":"2015-02-05T14:49:00","slug":"news-story-international-graduates-help-birmingham-firm-grow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=53488","title":{"rendered":"News story: International graduates help Birmingham firm grow"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p><abbr title=\"UK Trade and Investment\">UKTI<\/abbr> West Midlands has teamed up with Aston University, offering student placement opportunities to help companies overcome cultural and language barriers. <\/p>\n<p>In the past 12 months Trade and Export Finance Ltd (<abbr title=\"Trade and Export Finance Ltd\">TAEFL<\/abbr>) has employed seven graduates and postgraduates, with support from <abbr title=\"UK Trade and Investment\">UKTI<\/abbr>\u2019s Postgraduates for International Business programme. <\/p>\n<p>The graduates working with <abbr title=\"Trade and Export Finance Ltd\">TAEFL<\/abbr>, from Lithuania, Romania, Nigeria, and Cyprus, have been helping to boost the firm\u2019s export activity by assisting with the firm\u2019s trade in overseas markets.<\/p>\n<p>Independent research by Professor Foreman-Peck from Cardiff Business School estimates that as much as \u00a348 billion in international sales is lost every year because of language and cultural ignorance.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign-language speaking graduates placed in companies can build contacts and trade in countries where English is not the first language. They can also help companies with a range of other tasks, such as making new international business contacts, helping develop international facing websites, and advising on cultural and business etiquette.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p>Find out more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/postgraduates-for-international-business\">Postgraduates for International Business programme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"making-the-most-of-the-opportunity\">Making the most of the opportunity<\/h2>\n<p>Speaking about the <abbr title=\"UK Trade and Investment\">UKTI<\/abbr> scheme, which is available to exporters throughout the English regions, <abbr title=\"Trade and Export Finance Ltd\">TAEFL<\/abbr> founder Mark Runiewicz said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>To work well internationally, you need to go the extra mile to connect. We found that when helping clients trading in new markets where English is not the first language, potential customers feel safer and more at ease using their own language.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Their language and cultural skills mean they are able to create a firmer bond with both clients and potential clients, which is more likely to lead to a successful business relationship.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The programme is a win-win model. We benefit from the energy and enthusiasm of students who are happy to be given the opportunity to learn in a supportive environment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One of <abbr title=\"Trade and Export Finance Ltd\">TAEFL<\/abbr>\u2019s international students, Lelia Neophytou from Cyprus said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Working in a growing international environment gives me real life experience in readiness for doing international business.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"about-taefl\">About <abbr title=\"Trade and Export Finance Ltd\">TAEFL<\/abbr><br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p>Birmingham based <abbr title=\"Trade and Export Finance Ltd\">TAEFL<\/abbr>, set up in 2001 by Mark Runiewicz and Mary McErlain,  is a consultancy specialising in helping firm\u2019s access financial solutions including bank loans.  The firm creates financial structures which meet the needs of clients while also appealing to lenders. <abbr title=\"Trade and Export Finance Ltd\">TAEFL<\/abbr> carries out annual research on international trading in the UK and uses its own finance house to finance orders both in the UK and overseas. Most clients are UK based selling into both home and overseas markets including Europe, USA, Kazakhstan, DR Congo and Nigeria.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"regional-help\">Regional help<\/h2>\n<p><abbr title=\"UK Trade and Investment\">UKTI<\/abbr> has a language and cultural adviser in every region of the country who act as a facilitator between companies and universities for the scheme.<\/p>\n<p>Lead Language and Cultural Adviser for <abbr title=\"UK Trade and Investment\">UKTI<\/abbr> in the West Midlands, Gerti Willis, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Recruiting an international student from the market you are trying to export to can have a dramatic effect on your business.
