The sun\u2019s harmful ultraviolet (<abbr title=\"Ultraviolet\">UV<\/abbr>) radiation increases the risk of skin cancer, including melanoma.   <\/p>\n<p>Dr Dipti Patel, joint director of National Travel Health Network and Centre (<abbr title=\"National Travel Health Network and Centre\">NaTHNaC<\/abbr>), advises: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Getting a golden tan is a goal for many travellers, but a tan is not a sign of health, it is a visible sign of damage which can lead to skin ageing and skin cancer.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><abbr title=\"National Travel Health Network and Centre\">NaTHNaC<\/abbr> and Public Health England (<abbr title=\"Public health England\">PHE<\/abbr>) encourage fans to ensure they are adequately protected against harmful <abbr title=\"Ultraviolet\">UV<\/abbr> rays by following the advice below: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>seek shade when the sun is at its highest point and try not to spend a lot of time in the sun<\/li>\n<li>always use a high <abbr title=\"Sun protection factor\">SPF<\/abbr> sun-cream which blocks <abbr title=\"Ultraviolet A\">UVA<\/abbr> and <abbr title=\"Ultraviolet B\">UVB<\/abbr> radiation \u2013 use the right amount of sun cream:\n<ul>\n<li>at least 2 tablespoons for an average adult every time<\/li>\n<li>apply 30 minutes before going outside and re-apply every 2 hours<\/li>\n<li>after swimming<\/li>\n<li>sweating a lot or exercising<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>cover up: close knit clothes and wide brimmed hats offer the best protection<\/li>\n<li>children are particularly vulnerable to sun damage and should be protected with high <abbr title=\"Sun protection factor\">SPF<\/abbr> sun cream, clothes, hats and sun shelters<\/li>\n<li>buy sunglasses that block out 100% of <abbr title=\"Ultraviolet A\">UVA<\/abbr> and <abbr title=\"Ultraviolet B\">UVB<\/abbr> rays: look for a British Standard mark or <abbr title=\"Ultraviolet\">UV<\/abbr> 400 label<\/li>\n<li>if you have sunburn, avoid direct sunlight by covering up the affected areas of skin and stay in the shade until your sunburn has healed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mary Gawthrop, travel specialist nurse at <abbr title=\"National Travel Health Network and Centre\">NaTHNaC<\/abbr> said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We strongly urge travellers to protect eyes from sun exposure.  Over-exposure to <abbr title=\"Ultraviolet\">UV<\/abbr> rays without proper eye protection, can cause a temporary effects similar to sunburn on the skin.  Wearing a wide-brimmed hat can reduce the amount of <abbr title=\"Ultraviolet\">UV<\/abbr> rays that reach your face and eyes.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Protecting your skin from the sun using sunscreen is better than <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/Conditions\/Sunburn\/Pages\/Treatment.aspx\">treating<\/a> its harmful effects.
