{"id":54198,"date":"2015-02-23T11:39:00","date_gmt":"2015-02-23T11:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=520cb710427a5c51b6a89735e38d30cd"},"modified":"2015-02-23T11:39:00","modified_gmt":"2015-02-23T11:39:00","slug":"news-story-transport-secretary-visits-midlands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=54198","title":{"rendered":"News story: Transport Secretary visits Midlands"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin today (23 February 2015) visited the East Midlands to see how transport investments are helping to boost the economy.<\/p>\n<p>He first visited East Midlands Airport, the second largest air freight airport in the UK, to mark the airport\u2019s record-breaking cargo figures.<\/p>\n<p>Last year saw the airport move nearly 310,000 tonnes of cargo \u2013 the most in the airport\u2019s 49 year history and 3.6% more than in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Mr McLoughlin also visited the operations hub of delivery company DHL, which is investing \u00a390 million in improvements to their facility at East Midlands Airport.<\/p>\n<p>Later, the Transport Secretary travelled to Kenilworth to mark the start of work on a new \u00a312.1 million station for the town.<\/p>\n<p>The new station, which has been made possible with \u00a34.9 million of funding from the Department for Transport, will transform travel for passengers in Warwickshire, providing new and direct links to Leamington Spa and Coventry.<\/p>\n<p>The station will help to attract tourists and retail customers to the town and boost economic growth for the area.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Investing in transport infrastructure is a vital part of this government\u2019s long term economic plan.<\/p>\n<p>The Midlands are crucial to this country\u2019s prosperity and I welcome the record breaking figures for East Midlands Airport \u2013 this is a real achievement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The government\u2019s investment in our railways means that there will be a new railway station at Kenilworth which will give a huge boost to economic growth across the region.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Patrick McLoughlin at Kenilworth Station\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/36671\/960-patrick-mcloughlin-kenilworth.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>Patrick McLoughlin MP and Jeremy Wright QC MP in Kenilworth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kenilworth has not been served by a station since 1965, when the original station at Priory Road closed down.
